Successful marketing of eco-friendly natural gas
- Around two billion kilowatt hours of eco-friendly natural gas sold since market launch
- WINGAS eco-friendly natural gas once again awarded TÜV certificate at the energy trade fair E-world
Energy company WINGAS is successfully trading eco-friendly natural gas products: since the market launch two years ago, around two billion kilowatt hours (kWh) of climate neutral natural gas have been sold. "The potential of natural gas to protect the climate and contribute to an affordable energy turnaround continues to be underestimated, unfortunately, but we are on the right track," WINGAS Managing Director for Sales Ludwig Möhring said at the energy trade fair E-world in Essen. "As a company that cares deeply about nature and the environment, we are therefore delighted about the keen interest in our CO2-neutral products from our customers. Eco-friendly natural gas creates an excellent opportunity to avoid CO2 emissions and ensure affordable climate protection." With WINGAS eco-friendly natural gas customers can entirely offset the greenhouse gas emissions generated by the combustion of natural gas. The emissions are neutralized by CO2 reductions from climate protection projects. "These projects can be realized and continued long-term thanks to our contribution," Möhring explained. Each certificate is equal to one ton of CO2 or the equivalent volume of other greenhouse gases with the same hazard potential and may be used only once. "So far we have retired 350,000 certificates. This means that 350,000 tons of CO2 have been saved," the Managing Director said. In the current year the company expects to sell one billion kilowatt hours of climate-neutral natural gas. The costs for the certificates purchased are reallocated within the gas price.
Today WINGAS once again received the certificate for "Climate-neutral Gas Combustion" from the TÜV Nord at the E-world energy trade fair. The TÜV is an external inspection agency and makes sure that the overall volume of greenhouse gases arising from the gas sold as climate-neutral is actually offset. The new TÜV certificate is valid for the gas year 2012/13. "We are delighted to contribute to an important element of international climate protection with our products, which support climate protection projects. At the same time, as an internationally active company we are hereby adhering to the offset principle laid down in the 1997 Kyoto Protocol," Möhring said summarizing the motivation for the product diversification.
WINGAS offers two eco-friendly natural gas products
A range of climate protection projects are supported worldwide thanks to the certificates. WINGAS offers its customers two categories of eco-friendly natural gas products: "Innovative" and "Regenerative". With the WINGAS "Innovative" eco-friendly natural gas, the company is currently supporting the project "Use of nitrous oxide (N2O) catalysts in Caojing" in China, the goal of which is the sustained reduction of nitrous oxide emissions from nitric acid production. It also aims to promote, transfer and export innovative technologies. The annual reduction in emissions achieved by this project is 400,000 tons of CO2.
The "Regenerative" eco-friendly natural gas supports projects that contribute to reducing CO2 emissions by diversifying the electricity mix. The desired effects in terms of sustainability are strengthening the role of renewable energies, improving local electricity supply, the transfer of innovative ideas and conserving fossil fuels. In this field WINGAS is supporting a geothermal plant project in Gunung Salak, Indonesia, which saves 115,000 t CO2 annually, as well as the wind power project Te-Apiti in New Zealand. The CO2 savings here amount to 180,000 tons a year.
