Construction of a biogas facility to produce biomethane for feeding into the natural gas grad begins today in Oschatz, Saxony. BALANCE VNG BioEnergie GmbH (BALANCE), a whollyowned subsidiary of VNG - Verbundnetz Gas Aktiengesellschaft (VNG), developed the project and established a project company called MBG Mitteldeutsche Biogasgesellschaft mbH (MBG) for its realization. BALANCE owns all the shares of MBG.

BALANCE is investing 13.5 million euros in the project. Once it has been completed the facility will feed some 55 million kilowatt hours of gas per year into the natural gas grid of MITGAS Verteilnetz GmbH. This is equivalent to the consumption of approximately 2,400 households. Farmers from the region will supply an annual 46,000 metric tons of feedstock comprising two thirds corn and one third whole plant silage, grass silage and catch crops. Schmack Biogas GmbH has been commissioned to build the facility.

"We are delighted to be implementing this project," Uwe Barthel, VNG Executive Board member for Gas Sales/Technical Affairs, said. "VNG is thus underscoring its commitment to renewables and the promising symbiosis of natural gas and biomethane," Barthel added. As a business partner of NAWARO BioEnergie Park Güstrow, VNG has been taking biomethane since June 2009.

BALANCE, a whollyowned subsidiary of VNG - Verbundnetz Gas AG, was founded in December 2006. The new company pools VNG's activities relating to alternative energies and energy efficiency technologies. BALANCE focuses its operations on comprehensive and professional project development, investment in biomethane projects and various services in the field of biomethane.
