Die Welt wird zur Stadt: mehr als die Hälfte der Weltbevölkerung lebt in Städten, und die Verstädterung nimmt weiterhin zu. Einige Städte werden als Global Cities zu Schaltzentralen der Weltwirtschaft und somit zu urbanen Zentren der Macht. Global Cities sind die Orte, an denen Globalisierung "gemacht" wird. Dort sind die Zentralen der Konzerne, die Börsen und die Firmen der Finanz-, Rechts- und anderer gehobener Dienstleistungen angesiedelt, während die Industrie zunehmend in dezentrale Städte abwandert. Diskutierte Themen, die dieses Spannungsfeld aufzeigen, sind: Megastädte, globale Architektur, transnationale Migration, wirtschaftliche Dynamik und Polarisierungstendenzen der Arbeitsmärkte.
