Pete Alexander, Director of Business Development and Strategic Planning with L-3 Communication Holdings Inc., commissioned Heartwood to develop a 3D interactive learning application to train engineers without risk to injury or having to use the actual equipment. The 3D learning experience empowered engineers to build, operate, maintain & market all the activities in a 3D environment anywhere, anytime and was deployed on tablet device. In collaboration with Heartwood, L-3 was able to save training dollars and increased engineer productivity by three times. L-3 collaborated with Heartwood to extend this project to develop configurators to help customers configure their products. This resulted in increase in sales. "My clients can see all the specifications they need and see every element and angle, which captures the imagination of the user immediately -- as if suddenly they were a soldier," said Pete Alexander.

Raytheon awarded Heartwood the contract to develop Web Based 3D Learning Applications for one of their customers based on Unity after seeing the Unity-based prototype (http://hwd3d.com/services/custom-3d-virtual-trainers-simulations-and-training-videos/raytheon-patriot-web-virtual-trainer/). The US Army is now in talks with Raytheon to revitalize immersive 3D maintenance training applications after seeing this prototype. Many new developments will likely be based on Unity, and there will be multiple deployments to PC, web and handheld devices.
