The first wind turbine for Trianel Windpark Borkum II (TWB II) is erected. By finishing the installation of the rotor blades, the erection of the first wind turbine for the municipal offshore wind farm is completed. Two further wind turbines will be installed and put into operation in the next few days. EWE and Trianel plan on commissioning the complete offshore wind farm with 32 wind turbines and an overall installed capacity of 200 MW by the end of 2019.

“With the erection of the first wind turbine we have successfully started the next construction phase and will commission the wind farm step by step”, says Klaus Horstick, Commercial Director of Trianel Windpark Borkum II GmbH & Co. KG (TWB II). “Two-thirds of the turbines have already been delivered and are waiting to be installed. We are on the right track and expect to complete the offshore project together with our shareholders and project partners as planned by the end of 2019.”

Since the beginning of August the Jan de Nul installation vessel Taillevent commutes between the base harbor in Eemshaven (The Netherlands) and the construction site which is situated six hours away from the base harbour. Per ride, the jack-up vessel ships components for three wind turbines – nacelles with pre-assembled rotor hubs, pre-assembled towers and nine rotor blades. Under ideal weather conditions the installation of one wind turbine will take the offshore workers about two to three days – from the erection of the tower to the installation of the nacelle and screwing of the rotor blades. By the middle of July 2019 the installation campaign started with the loading and mobilization of the Taillevent in Eemshaven.

At the end of June 2018 the construction works of Trianel Windpark Borkum II started with the installation of the first monopile and the foundation works were completed on time by installing the 32nd monopile and transition piece in December 2018. The inter-array cable laying which started in September 2018 was completed by the end of the year as well. Since the beginning of 2019 works were carried out to put into operation the electrical components within the transition pieces and to connect them to the transformer substation. The beginning of the installation works for the wind turbines which was planned for the middle of April 2019 had to be postponed as the wind turbine manufacturer Senvion filed for insolvency.

Companies involved in the project are EWE AG with a share of 37.5% and a joint venture of the power utility of the city of Zurich with 24.51%. The municipal utilities cooperation Trianel, along with 17 municipal utilities from Germany, holds a share of 37.99%. The total investment for the offshore wind farm Trianel Windpark Borkum II amounts to around EUR 800 million.
