TietoEnator delivers forest resource data system to Forestry Development Centre Tapio

Frechen, (PresseBox) - TietoEnator will deliver a new forest resource data system to Forestry Development Centre Tapio and 13 regional forestry centres in Finland. The system supports the main functions of forestry centres, collection and maintenance of forest resource data. The delivery also includes a centralized extension of the database and integration interfaces to other systems.

The purpose of the forestry centres is to collect new forest stand data from 1,5 million hectares annually. Forest professionals and forest owners will be served better with effective data collection and more accurate information. Forest resource data is available through digital services.

TietoEnator has full responsibility for the delivery of the project. The new system will be implemented at the end of 2009. TietoEnator's strong experience in implementing large geographical information solutions and wide know-how about the wood-processing value chain will be utilized in this project. ESRI's geographical information technology and development tools will be used as system's spatial data platform.

"I believe that with this new system it is easier and more powerful to use geographical information produced either by forestry centres or by other sources. Later it is also possible to expand the system to support the forest centres' other operations", says Kirsi Valanne, Geographical Information Specialist at Tapio.

"After a bidding competition, the forest centres and Tapio chose TietoEnator to tailor an application based on ESRI's tools, enabling management of forest resource data collected by remote sensing methods. With this new system forest centres can increase the amount of annually collected forest resource data and at the same time reduce the costs of data collection per hectare", continues Henry Schneider, Tapio Project Manager responsible for developing the new forest resource data system.

"TietoEnator is the market leader of forest resource management solutions in Finland. Most of Finland's forest planning today is handled by systems developed and maintained by us. In this project we will gain valuable experience in utilizing ESRI's latest geographical information technology, which will make TietoEnator's market position even stronger. We see this application area as a strategic growth area and will invest in it also internationally", says Anttoni Vesterinen, SVP at TietoEnator Forest.
