Follow-up report on the International Surface Inspection Summit (ISIS) 2012, Mumbai, India, 6-7 March 2012

Aachen, (PresseBox) - The International Surface Inspection Summit (ISIS), a unique event for surface inspection systems in the metal industry, took place on 6 and 7 March 2012 at the Orchid Hotel in Mumbai, India. Around 95 participants and speakers from a dozen countries exchanged views on the latest in the field of automatic surface inspection. An exhibition for producers of surface inspection systems and an evening event on the rooftop of Mumbai's Orchid Hotel completed the program.

With welcoming addresses by Dr. Günter Bleimann-Gather, general manager of summit organizer TEMA Technologie Marketing AG, and by Dr. Somnath Basu from the Indian Institute of Technology, Bombay, the opening session was started. The opening session included lectures by high ranking representatives from the Indian steel industry: S. Pathak, chief of manufacturing at Tata Steel, A. Das, Sr. vice president of research and development at Essar Steel, and A. K. Paul, general manager of the Research and Development Centre for Iron and Steel, Steel Authority of India Limited (SAIL).

This opened the series of lectures for the 2012 iteration of the ISIS, which offered two days of quality presentations from manufacturers and users of automatic surface inspection systems, as well as from the scientific field. Participants took advantage of the opportunity to hear experts from around the world give technology reports on 3D surface inspection, methods and instruments, using data to improve quality, and machine vision. Important topics included the classification of defects, 3D checking, automatic generation of QA rules from data, and more. These lectures illustrated the direction the application of surface inspection systems will take in the future. There were also two solutions presented that were developed in India, in some cases for the first time, as with that of the SAIL institute (Steel Authority of India Limited). In an "interactive scientific workshop", numerous questions about technology and solution strategies were posed to the system suppliers and to scientists investigating e.g. crack recognition, image processing, enterprise resource planning.

A fabulous evening event on the rooftop of the Orchid Hotel left time for networking and socializing accompanied by live regional music, hors d'oeuvres and a dinner of Indian specialties.

ISIS.INDIA 2012 was a success on all sides. The feedback was very positive, with summit exhibitors, sponsors, participants and speakers all quite satisfied with their experiences at the International Surface Inspection Summit. Additionally, numerous conference participants were involved in deep discussions with the exhibitors and sponsors, thus likely leading to some fruitful future tie-ups.

TEMA Technologie Marketing AG has organized and executed the ISIS events since 2006, with earlier events being held in Luxembourg, Amsterdam, Wuhan China, and Düsseldorf Germany. As the only exhibition of its kind, the annual International Surface Inspection Summit has become the premiere scientific event for updates on the latest surface inspection technologies for long and flat products in the metals and other industries and their integration with IT systems. Planning for the next ISIS is already underway with the 2013 event scheduled to take place in Paris.

TEMA would like to heartily thank the sponsors and exhibitors of ISIS.INDIA 2012: platinum sponsor ISRA VISION PARSYTEC, gold sponsor Cognex, silver sponsors Siemens VAI, Unilux and KEODS, as well as exhibitor QuinLogic.
