For the first time at CES in Las Vegas the Germany-based start-up tado° is presenting 'The Heating App'. The app, which has been selling in Europe since November 2012, is the solution to rising energy costs and a modern, environmentally friendly lifestyle. Additionally tado° is giving a sneak peek at its next planned app - The Cooling App which will eventually target completely new markets.

One third of the energy consumed around the world is used for heating and cooling buildings. The systems used for this are controlled by devices that have been outdated for decades both in terms of design and technology. "Our number-one motivation for developing tado° was to tackle this issue and make a significant contribution to the energy transition. We believe in state-of-the-art intelligent technology that fully automatically ensures that no energy is wasted," says company founder Christian Deilmann. tado° is a completely new kind of smart climate control that not only makes everyday life easier, it also makes the home more comfortable and enables users to cut their energy costs.

The tado° Heating App

In November 2012 tado° brought its intelligent heating app to market in Germany, Austria and Switzerland followed by the whole of Europe one year later.

tado° is the first heating app that automatically adjusts to the residents' daily lives. Whether going to work as usual or taking a spontaneous weekend break with the family - the tado° application on the residents' mobile phones detects where they are and sets the temperature accordingly. When the last person has left the house a signal is automatically sent to the heating system to turn down the temperature. As soon as one of the residents starts to head home, tado° reacts immediately and warms up the house to the desired temperature.

Since no two buildings are the same, tado° learns about all the significant properties of a home in just a few days. For instance, how quickly it cools down or how the sunshine influences the interior temperature. This allows it to reach the desired temperature even more efficiently. In addition, tado° uses current weather forecasts. If the sun is going to shine the next day, tado° will automatically take this information into account and heat on a lower setting.

The tado° app can be downloaded for iOS and Android free of charge. Those who would like to actively use tado° will require the Connector Kit, which hooks the heating system up to the internet. It is compatible with almost all heating systems, regardless of the manufacturer. In Europe, the Connector Kit is available to buy with lifetime service for €299 or to rent for €8.25 on a monthly contract.

With the heating app consumers can cut their energy costs by an average of 27 percent*. It's also incredibly convenient, because once it has been installed, the user can simply relax and let tado° do the work.

*Beta test in winter 2011/2012. The end customers in the test made energy savings of 12-40% (compared to their heating behavior before using tado°).

The tado° Connector Kit's main part is the sleek white tado° Box that establishes a connection with the central heating. It communicates with the user's smartphone via the home Internet connection. The customer can install tado° in a few simple steps. Using the intuitive online guide the process only takes around 10-15 minutes. In Germany 97 percent of tado° customers install the Connector Kit themselves, but there is also an option to order an installation service.

What's the next cool thing?

In 2014, tado° plans to introduce The Cooling App to intelligently control air conditioning. Christian Deilmann explains: "We want to offer the advances which we have developed for The tado° Heating App to customers in warmer regions of the world who are struggling to use their AC efficiently."

tado° began developing its solution for heating systems in close cooperation with their users. The same process will apply for the cooling solution. Early adopters and technology enthusiast who have any kind of air conditioning at home or in the office are welcome to sign up at to be one of the first beta users. "We look forward to working together with beta users to give this new category the final touches.
