SynCap initiates biotechnology project

(PresseBox) (Frankfurt am Main, ) SynCap has initiated a renewable energy and biotechnology project aiming at the production of biodiesel from microalgae.

According to the company, the project's major objective is to implement a prototype photobioreactor that can demonstrate the feasibility of largescale microalgae biomass production.

SynCap has set up and has signed a fouryear agreement to manage a consortium of industrial and research partners including The University of Liège (ULG), the Laboratory of Plant Biochemistry and Photobiology and the Laboratory of Genetics; The University of Louvain (UCL), Faculty of Biological, agronomical Engineering and Environmental, and Institute of Life Sciences; N-Side, a company specialised in Operational Research models; Wetlands, a biotech company active in the field of industrial biotechnologies and has an expertise in the field of the integrated biorefinement; and Lhoist, is a producer of chemicals for industrial use.

BEMA has announced the completion of Phase 1 of a Research and Development Agreement with the Department of Research of the Walloon Region, Belgium.

SynCap has led the first research finance scheme of around €5m that is sponsored by the industrial partners, the Walloon region and Dr Philippe Janssens de Varebeke together with SynCap Management.

The second phase will focus on further process validation, economic modeling, and improved CO2 sequestration techniques for the scale up of algae biomass production, according to a statement.
