Sun Microsystems gibt die Online-Verfügbarkeit des 3D-Animationsfilms "Big Buck Bunny" bekannt, der fast ausschließlich mit freier Software erstellt wurde. Zum digitalen Rendering dieses Kurzfilms nutzten die Filmemacher die umfangreiche On-Demand-Grid-Infrastruktur Sun Network.com. Als Rendering-Programm ist die Open-Source-Software "Blender" eingesetzt worden, die beim Blender Institute (blender.org), Amsterdam zum Download bereit und bei Sun Network.com als Applikation zur Verfügung steht. Um "Big Buck Bunny" zu erstellen, wurden über 50.000 CPU-Stunden Computerleistung benötigt, die Sun Network.com bereitstellte. Die holländischen 3D-Rendering-Spezialisten vom Blender Institute konnten somit Hunderte von CPU's simultan einsetzen, ohne die erforderliche Hardware vorhalten zu müssen.
