Burrows controls brand integrity and print consistency with Trueflow
WPP Group company, Burrows, has brought its prepress production in-house with the introduction of a Screen's Trueflow PDF workflow system.
The solution was Screen's Trueflow, which Burrows was able to tailor to its specific needs as well as integrate into its existing prepress facilities.
Production consistency now part of the creative process Burrows uses approximately 15 print suppliers throughout Europe and Trueflow enables those printers to be supplied with files whose output characteristics can be guaranteed.
The Screen solution is unique in that it produces fully PDF X/1a and PDFX 3 compliant Outline PDFs*, but where the content has been turned into vectors and all of its different parameters are fixed. Burrows chose this route as it stops the files that it sends out to its different printers being re-processed - whatever CTP device is eventually used. This gives complete data integrity with no reinterpretation of fonts, content or colours.
Another requirement was the need to work with different language versions of the same file. "On some jobs we may have to produce 20 different market variations with up to 53 languages," explains Prepress Manager Mike Dawson, "and Screen was able to come up with a solution to handle this process automatically. Jobs that could take all day are now produced in a couple of hours.
"Because we manage pre-press in-house before distribution to external printers, the Outline PDF is perfect as it puts the control over results back into the hands of the person creating the file and re-secures the PDF as an un-editable format. The ability to lock down colour and content before files are dispatched to printers - anywhere in the world - gives us a high level of security and peace of mind."
Burrows is a Wunderman Group company (part of Young & Rubicam Inc, owned by WPP Group plc). Burrows employs 140 people worldwide, and provides a wide range of creative and production services from its facilities in the UK, Germany and the US. More information: www.burrows.info
Note to editor:
*Benefits of Outline PDFs
When the PDF format was first introduced, one of its attractions was the fact that the content was fixed and that it should output identically on every device. Unfortunately, even though a PDF can be locked, the reinterpretation by the RIP controlling the CtP device meant that 100% consistency could not be guaranteed. In addition, PDFs occasionally needed editing in order that the printed result met expectations and a wide range of editing tools have been developed. We have reached the stage now where a PDF is almost as editable as the original application file and different workflow solutions treat PDFs in different ways - particularly in terms of colour. This is fine for putting right badly created PDFs but it also means that the printed results are anything but consistent. Too often correctly created PDFs do not generate the desired results.
Dainippon Screen Mfg. Co., Ltd (Kyoto, Japan) is one of the world's largest manufacturers and suppliers of system components for the prepress and printing industries. Its large range of equipment includes scanners, RIPs, proofing systems, and imagesetters, as well as platesetters and digital printing presses. The company is also a well-known manufacturer of equipment for the semiconductor and flat panel display manufacturing industries.
Trueflow is an automated prepress production and control system operating on a PC/MS windows platform. The modular approach combines Adobe's latest PostScript and PDF technology with Screen's long experience in high quality colour digital workflows. Trueflow caters for automatic input of PostScript 3 and PDF, file checking, OPI, trapping and imposition. Finally, direct output can be made to Screen's high quality CtF and CtP devices or to other manufacturers devices by outputting standard file formats such as TIFF, PDF and PostScript. Trueflow features a WWW Browser based GUI that allows remote control and monitoring from any location with Internet connectivity.
