Faster, More Efficient Networking from SMC Networks at CeBIT 2008

SMC Networks breaks barriers on performance, power and price on Stand A56, Hall 13

(PresseBox) (München, ) SMC Networks (, leading provider of LAN hardware and broadband connectivity devices, will be showcasing a portfolio of innovative networking solutions, including the first 10G copper switch and 10G fibre and copper adapter cards, at CeBIT 2008 in Hannover. In addition to brand new products, visitors to Stand A56 (Hall 13), will also see updates to the existing portfolio of high performance networking products, introduced to provide future-proof solutions for SoHo to SMB through to Enterprise and ISP businesses.

World’s First 10G Copper Solutions

Visitors to the stand will experience first-hand SMC Network’s commitment to helping more customers to maximise network efficiency, by witnessing the launch of the industry’s first standard-based 10GBASE-T and 10G fibre XFP server adapter cards.

Both the SMC10GPCle-XFP and the SMC10GPCle-10BT boast a range of features that set them apart from competitive offerings including the fact that the SMC10GPCle-10BT is the industry’s first commercially available IEEE802.3an standards-compliant 10GBASE-T server adapter. Copper-based networks are easier to install, maintain and upgrade, and the SMC10GPCIe-10BT is the first in a series of products to be launched by SMC Networks that will drive the adoption of 10G into the data centre and across the Enterprise. The SMC10GPCle-XFP offers pluggable XFP modules [1] (SR or LR). This provides flexibility of different 10G networking expansions, delivering 10GbE performance from 300m (SR) to 10km (LR) distance between ports.

SMC Networks will also be using CeBIT 2008 to showcase the industry’s first standard-compliant multi-port 10GBASE-T and 10G fibre XFP network switch (SMC8724-10BT) planned to launch later this year. The 24-port standalone TigerSwitch™ 10G leverages the industry’s leading 10G technology, including Solarflare®’s 10Xpress® PHY and switching silicon from Fulcrum® Microsystems. Conformance with IEEE802.3an assures customers that the new TigerSwitch™ 10G will be fully standards-compliant and interoperable.

The TigerAccess™ Extended Ethernet VDSL2 solution enables multi-dwelling/multi-tenant environments such as apartment blocks, hotels and offices to benefit from high speed network connections on existing phone lines (POTS) and ISDN lines. The new solution offers a maximum data rate of 100Mbps upstream and downstream, more than 6 times the rate of standard 15Mbps VDSL, meaning users can now enjoy Triple Play services such as High Definition TV and VoIP simultaneously. The new TigerAccess™ Extended Ethernet VDSL2 product family consists of a 24-port VDSL2 switch with built-in splitter (SMC7824M/VSW) and a VDSL2 CPE/ modem (SMC7801A/VCP), which connects to a PC or laptop equipped with a 10/100Mbps network interface card, with no complex software configuration required.

Network Attached Storage (NAS)

Networking is all about accessibility. SMC Networks’ expertise in networking leads naturally to the introduction of a new SMC TigerStore™ product line of affordable high-performance storage systems for the SMB and home markets, starting with the SMCNAS04 and SMCNAS24 in early 2007. New to the NAS family is the 2-bay NAS Storage Server (SMCNAS02) which will be showcased for the first time during CeBIT.

The SMC TigerStore™ SMB NAS Storage Server family is a storage solution for small to medium businesses. The SMCNAS04 has four SATA II drive slots to accommodate up to 4TB of storage, while the SMCNAS24 has four 250GB drives built-in for a full terabyte of storage right out of the box. The new TigerStore™ SOHO NAS Storage Server (SMCNAS02) comes with two SATA II drive slots for up to 2TB of storage. The integrated SD/MMC/MC card reader allows to easily view and transfer photos from the card directly to the NAS server.

With their high-speed networked storage capabilities and built-in iTunes® music server, network users can easily access and share data files, music, photos and videos. Supporting all relevant RAID levels for fault tolerance, as well as JBOD (BIG), SMC Networks' NAS Storage servers further ensure data integrity with the support for UPS power backup and hot-swappable hard drives. Active Directory support allows users to link the NAS server to a Windows Server domain and can be used to control user rights on the NAS.

Wireless N – Fastest Speed and Range

Ideal for small offices and home environments, wireless networks provide a simpler, less expensive solution to cabling. Thanks to the new IEEE802.11n wireless standard, which provides significantly greater speed and range, WLAN is now suitable for high-bandwidth and time-sensitive applications such as video and voice streaming, resulting in an increase of the adoption of this solution. All the latest SMC Networks’ Wireless N products meet the current IEEE802.11n Draft v2.0 standard and are WiFi® certified to ensure cross-vendor interoperability. Visitors will be able to view the whole portfolio of 300Mbps Wireless N ADSL/ broadband routers and adapter cards.

DIALOG Partner Program

With 100% of sales made through partnerships, SMC Networks recognizes the need to look after business partners in order to deliver first-class customer solutions and ensure jointly profitable relationships. The DIALOG partner program consists of three levels, Platinum, Gold, and Silver, with partners qualifying for each level according to their commitment to SMC Networks and their corresponding business levels. In return partners receive a host of benefits including preferential pricing, rebate schemes, exclusive Level-2 training material and marketing funds. CeBIT visitors interested in joining SMC Networks’ partner program will be able to learn what the program has to offer and to register on the stand. Registering at the show will automatically enter new partners into a prize draw to win an Apple iPod Nano 4GB.
