Groundbreaking for eco-friendly power plant in Gönyü, Hungary

In the presence of Gordon Bajnai, the Hungarian Minister for National Development and Economy, the groundbreaking ceremony was held on March 26, 2009 for the Gönyü combined cycle power plant in Hungary, which Siemens Energy is building as a turnkey project for E.ON. The Göny? plant is located in Györ-Sopron, a region experiencing highly dynamic economic development. At 433 megawatts the installed gross capacity of the natural-gas-fired plant will be sufficient to supply approximately 600,000 Hungarian households with eco-friendly electricity.

"This plant will feature the technology that not only has a solid track record in almost 200 projects worldwide but has also almost become a tradition in the partnership between Siemens and E.ON," said Michael Becker, CFO of the Fossil Power Generation Division of Siemens Energy. "At 58 percent the plant's efficiency is a top world ranking today. This plant will attain the highest savings in CO2 emissions possible today for fossil-fueled power plants. The power plant will make a significant contribution toward reliable, cost-effective and climate-compatible power supply in Hungary," added Becker.

In addition to turnkey erection Siemens will supply the main plant components including an SGT5-4000F gas turbine, a steam turbine and a hydrogen-cooled generator. The company will also supply the heat-recovery steam generator, the mechanical equipment, and the electrical and instrumentation systems. The order also includes a maintenance agreement covering a period of nine years.
