More security and support for the crew: New Zealand Navy modernizes two frigates with Siemens Technology

(PresseBox) (Erlangen, ) The Siemens Industry Solutions Division has received an order from the New Zealand Ministry of Defence to upgrade the Integrated Platform Management System (IPMS) of two frigates of the Royal New Zealand Navy and to supply an overall Navigation Solution. The main aim is to improve the control, monitoring and automation system, to relieve the crew of routine tasks and to increase operational reliability. The order volume is in the lower double-digit million-euro range.

The ANZAC Class (Australian and New Zealand Army Corps) frigates are the mainstay of the New Zealand Navy's combat force, and have a range of over 7000 nautical miles. The two ships, named Te Kaha and Te Mana, were delivered and commissioned in 1997 and 1999. In line with the second phase of a 58 Million $ upgrade project Siemens will modernize the IPMS on board of both ships. It controls and monitors all power elements of the vessel, from the diesel engines to the gas turbine, gearbox and propellers. Furthermore the IPMS controls and monitors ancillary modules of the vessels such as supply and distribution, as well as ventilation and fire alarm systems. The upgraded IPMS will provide improved control and monitoring systems and will enable the introduction of more automation technology. It relieves the crew of routine tasks and simultaneously offers a high level of availability and operational reliability. To supply an integrated navigation solution two Integrated Navigation and Tactical Systems from OSI Geospatial will be integrated with the IPMS.

Siemens has been supporting the Royal Australian Navy and the Royal New Zealand Navy since the late 1980's as the provider of all electrical equipment on the ANZAC Class frigates and today continues to provide through life support and engineering changes.
