Chinese Shipyards and Siemens offer comprehensive solutions for drilling and production platforms - Offshore Production more and more important for Oi

(PresseBox) (Erlangen, ) Deep water production from the offshore sector will grow considerably in China and worldwide in order to match growing demand. “With its innovative technologies and solutions, Siemens has enabled Chinese shipyards to become world’s leading suppliers of drilling and production platforms, not only for local production in China, but also for export purposes”, stated Christian Lupp, General Manager Oil and Gas of the Siemens Group Industrial Solutions and Services (I&S) in China. Siemens has developed innovative solutions, he says, to improve the reliability of offshore drilling and production platforms while reducing operation time. As the leading electrical supplier Siemens cooperates successfully with Chinese shipyards to build up a reputation as key player in the international offshore market which is currently dominated by countries like Korea and Singapore.

Offshore market moves from shallow water jackets to deepwater floaters. The challenges in China lie in the exploration and development of new oil and gas deposits in areas that are more difficult to access, such as in the South China Sea. Towards 40 billion euros are scheduled to be invested worldwide in the development of offshore and deep-sea resources in the coming five years. Making use of these energy sources imposes particularly high requirements in terms of integrated technological solutions for automation and the operation of production installations. At the same time a high degree of standardization is required in the plant technology in order to guarantee the safety of the plants, protection of the environment and economic efficiency of extraction.

Siemens is one of the leading solution providers worldwide for EIT Solutions (Electrical, Instrumentation, and Telecommunication) in offshore market. Based on partnership and shared expertise Chinese shipyards and Siemens became international players for offshore shipbuilding in the past two years. “Together we provide solutions and platforms for national and international customers to explore the offshore oil and gas resources”, Lupp stated. This development imposes high requirements in terms of integrated (process) solutions, based on proprietary products and technologies. As a complete systems supplier Siemens offers Chinese shipyards integrated instrumentation and control technology, safety and security systems, power generation and distribution, telecommunications solutions and compression plants for floating production, storage and offloading (FPSO) units. All-embracing solutions on the basis of proven components ensure higher productivity at lower operating costs on floating or fixed-installation units.

In order to open up as yet untapped oil and gas resources, new technologies need to be developed and put to use. “In the coming years, global consumption will continue to rise and the proportion of production from the offshore sector will grow considerably in order to secure supplies”, explained Lupp. Chinese shipyards and Siemens are developing solutions, he says, to extract, transport and distribute crude oil and natural gas in future under extreme climatic and geological conditions, and to do so safely and in an environmentally responsible manner.

The Siemens Industrial Solutions and Services Group (I&S) is the integrator of systems and solutions for industrial and infrastructure facilities and global service provider for the plant and projects business covering planning, installation, operation and the entire life cycle. I&S uses its own products and systems and process technologies in order to enhance productivity and improve competitiveness of companies in the sectors of metallurgy, water treatment, pulp and paper, oil and gas, marine engineering, open-cast mining, airport logistics, postal automation, intelligent traffic systems and industrial services.
