Siemens VAI Metals Technologies has received an order from voestalpine Stahl GmbH in Austria to modernize parts of a hot strip mill at the company's Linz location. This includes renewal of coiler units and installation of a new crop shear. The order value is in the twodigit million euro range and the project is scheduled for completion in July 2010.

voestalpine Stahl GmbH is currently implementing a comprehensive program of modernization for its hot strip mill in Linz. The aim is to increase annual hot strip production from today's 4.6 million metric tons to five million metric tons. At the same time, high-strength steel grades and wider and thicker hot strip are to be added to the range of products. In the context of this project, modernization of the coiling plant has also become necessary.

For this purpose, Siemens is supplying two new coilers as replacements for coilers 3 and 4 and is renewing sideguide control of coiler 5 as well. The project also includes installation of the electrical equipment and basic automation of the three coilers. The equipment to be installed is based on Siroll HM, the integrated solution concept from Siemens for hot strip mills.

The existing crop shear will be replaced with a new drum-type rotary crop shear, for which a Duored helical gear unit made by Flender will be used for the first time. These gear units are characterized by their high transferrable power as well as by their compactness and low weight.

This enables a less massive and less expensive design of the foundations.
