SGS Statutory Inspection for Petrojet Lifting Equipment
In February 2014, Petrojet of Egypt once again selected SGS to carry out statutory inspection on lifting equipment as well as training for rigger and driver personnel in accordance with local and international standards.
SGS has been providing Petrojet international supply chain and lifting services since 2007. This one-year agreement will see a project manager and three lifting engineers moving between multiple sites examining and certifying lifting equipment and accessories.
Established in 1975 as a joint stock company, Petrojet has succeeded in positioning itself in the top spot for petroleum related projects in Egypt. A multidisciplinary contractor, Petrojet specializes in providing engineering, procurement and construction (EPC) services to the oil, gas, petrochemical, chemical and power industries as well as major infrastructure and building projects.
Petrojet has an expanded services portfolio and is striving to become a one-stop-shop for its clients.
SGS Services for Petrojet
SGS inspectors will be examining lifting equipment owned or rented by Petrojet on site and in Petrojet workshops. Examination services will be conducted at regular intervals of once or twice a year for equipment owned by Petrojet. Rented equipment will be verified before it is put into service.
Equipment to be inspected includes forklifts, overhead cranes, chains and wires and man-lifts. Most work is planned to be carried out in workshops. Inspectors will receive 48 hours notice for inspections on equipment being used in projects at external sites. SGS engineers will be traveling to several sites including the Qattamia workshop in Cairo, the West Desert and the workshop in Suez. In Alexandria, services will be delivered at the marine workshop, northern sites and an ethylene project.
It is absolutely essential to ensure the safe operation of cranes, lifting and hoisting equipment. In Egypt, SGS specialists will conduct visual testing, load testing and non-destructive testing (NDT) if necessary to verify compliance to statutory requirements.
SGS lifting equipment inspection services at Petrojet sites are to include checking brakes, clutches, sheaves and wire rope assemblies, reviewing design studies and calculations as well as dynamic and static load testing. Inspectors will also ensure the integrity of crane girders, rails and columns of overhead cranes, survey line level and span crane gantry, and perform non-destructive testing of load hooks to identify cracks and visual inspections looking for distortions.
Operational tests will assure inspectors that units are functioning properly and reliably. SGS will inspect equipment prior to implementation and perform periodic testing for mechanical, structural, electrical and safety systems as well as wire ropes and chains.
All safety devices will be examined and re-tested. Assessments to estimate remaining life and regulatory compliance will also be carried out. SGS personnel will then supervise any repair work.
SGS experts will provide Petrojet authorities the confidence that all associated regulatory requirements have been met through independent inspection carried out in accordance with all applicable regulations, standards and engineering practices. Inspectors will assure those responsible that lifting equipment is in safe and proper working condition and capability. SGS statutory inspection services will maintain equipment capability and availability in order to maximize uptime and schedule outages to minimize operational impact.
Additionally, skilled SGS engineers will provide valuable training for Petrojet lifting equipment staff in accordance with local and international requirements.
