SGS Performs Drilling Equipment Inspection for Easternwell Energy in Australia

(PresseBox) (Geneva, ) On August 1, 2013, SGS was awarded a contract to provide drilling equipment inspection (DEI) for the Easternwell Energy Rig 102 in Queensland, Australia. Over ten days, a team of SGS experts inspected 311 pieces of drill pipes, drill collars, heavy weight drill pipes and various tooling to detect defects and ensure the safety and reliability of the drilling equipment in subsequent operational phases.

Pipes, rigs, and oilfield tubulars are vulnerable to internal and external corrosion, cracking, third-party damage and manufacturing flaws. To guarantee the smooth operation of this costly equipment, detect defects and discontinuities in the material before they cause serious damage and thus reduce financial risks, professional drilling equipment inspection services are vital for companies in the upstream sector.

Easternwell Energy looked for a reliable inspection, verification, testing and certification company to ensure the safety and reliability of drilling equipment at Rig 102 during its high-volume drilling campaign in the Queensland region. Easternwell Energy Australia is currently one of the main drilling operators for Santos in the Surat Basin region, winning a well servicing contract for the Santos GLNG project in 2012.

Easternwell selected SGS from a long list of competitors to perform drilling equipment inspection based on years of SGS experience and first-rate competence in the oil and gas sector.

For the duration of the contract, scheduled from 26 August until 4 September, the team of SGS experts were on site at the Waddy Brake pad Rig 102 located 420 km north of the Roma base site in southwest Queensland.

In order to ensure the safety of the team, a Journey Management Plan was distributed to the customer, SGS management and the controlling body of the Surat Basin. Because the area is desolate and very remote, in-vehicle monitoring systems, which monitor the location, speed and condition of the vehicle at all times, are mandatory.

Once on site, the SGS team inspected the drill pipes, looking for corrosion, pitting, cuts, gouges, wall loss and fatigue cracks, and ensured the operational integrity of the equipment in accordance with the latest regulations and standards.

Based on extensive experience in drilling equipment inspection, SGS inspectors examined drill pipes, drill collars, heavy weight drill pipes and various tools by applying a wide portfolio of testing methods, including magnetic particle testing, liquid penetrate inspection, ultrasonic testing and visual inspection in compliance with T.H.Hill DS-1 Cat 3-5 and T.H.Hill DS-1 Cat 4 standards.

With the help of SGS, drilling equipment was inspected within a short period of time and Rig 102 was ready to drill the next well to the full satisfaction of the client.
