SGS Coordinates Massive Senegal Road Project

Beginning in January 2010 and envisaged for completion in March 2012, the rehabilitation of the Saint Louis - Rosso/Richard toll road is one of the biggest road projects to be undertaken in Senegal for some time. The project goal is to improve the road network, with great emphasis lying on further regional integration of the trade routes of the North and West African Road Ring.

The St Louis - Rosso/Richard Toll road provides access to airports and areas of urban expansion as well as rural development. The importance of this project is paramount for West Africa, where the coating of the urban and suburban routes will drastically improve access to St Louis airport and the University of St Louis. The project encompasses 120km of bitumen roads, 65km of tracks and 16km of urban works. Its importance is not to be underestimated and hence the project is funded by the European Union (FED).

As projects of such dimension require professional assistance and expertise by an independent third party, AGEROUTE, the company responsible for the implementation of construction, maintenance and rehabilitation of road networks in Senegal under the authority of the government body D.D.I. (Direction de la Dette et de l'Investissement), has awarded SGS Industrial Services the contract to provide Project Management Services.

The opportunities provided by this project are vast because Africa's infrastructure, energy and water needs, as well as the potential for mining and industrial works, ensures that the market for quality control and supervision could be worth as much as $1-$2 billion, particularly when it is considered that public estimates for development works have reached $40 billion. Development funds are now being made available from high quality groups in Europe, the US and the Middle East.
