Ricoh Semiconductor Support Centre launches the R5540 Series, 200mA/450mA N-Channel Load Switch IC
Today's electronics applications may contain an array of peripheral circuits, however these are not required to be used at all times. In such cases these circuits should be switched off to reduce power consumption and prolong battery life.
The R5540 is a switching element like a relay, positioned for example in between a main step down DCDC Converter and the specific peripheral circuit. A load switch can be controlled by a chip enable pin to switch the peripheral circuit on and off.
The R5540 offers several advantages beyond a traditional solution with an LDO:
- Lower on-resistance preventing heat dissipation, increasing the circuit efficiency
- Lower current consumption compared to an LDO, extending battery life
- No external capacitors required, saving circuit board space and cost
- The load switch is embedded in a tiny package, measuring only 1.0 x 1.0mm
The R5540 Load Switch has several embedded protection circuits:
- A fold back current limit circuit, which decreases the output current to around 50mA in case of a short circuit on the output
- A soft-start circuit which prevents high inrush currents and output overshoot peaks during the 'power-on' sequence
- An N-Channel MOSFET which, when used as a switching element inhibits any reverse current flow from output to input
An optional feature for the R5540 is the auto-discharge function which is used to dis-charge any external capacitors connected to the Load Switch output to ground.
The R5540 is available in a tiny DFN(PLP)1010-4 package only, convenient to use on high density and small circuit boards.
