Ruukki developed and produced laser steel during the mid-1990s, one of the first steel producers in Europe to make these steel grades. Since that time the company has continuously developed and optimised this special product for laser-cutting, in close co-operation with well-known producers of laser-cutting systems and press brake tooling.

From the very beginning the quality of their laser steel was an important issue for the Finnish steel specialists. It constantly had to be the best. The result of years of development work by Ruukki engineers together with specialists from the worlds of laser-cutting systems and press brake tooling is Ruukki Laser. Today this laser steel is often used as the reference steel at trade shows and for adjustment of laser-cutting systems on site.

The Dead Flat laser process makes laser cutting more efficient

Ruukki has found a formula with which laser cutting of sheet metal is becoming ever more straightforward for the end user.

The process is called Dead Flat and helps to reduce the internal stress of the material. The result is impressive - the sheet metal is extremely flat. During the process of laser-cutting the distortion is reduced to a minimum whilst the consistency of any press brake process is maximised. This also means a significantly more efficient process and shorter throughput times. An additional advantage is the fact that normally refinishing is not necessary.

After the "dead flat" treatment the bending of Ruukki laser sheets becomes noticeably easier than with conventional sheets. This is because Ruukki laser sheets show consistent mechanical properties and tight thickness tolerances which give predictable springback of the sheets. This also results in an extremely low variation in the bending angle. All these factors make working more efficient, allow easy setting-up of the equipment and help to create quick and trouble-free production.

"Micro scale" guarantees best cutting results

The surface quality of thick sheets is of exceptional importance, in laser cutting. Because more energy goes into the cutting process and less into the heating of the sheet, cutting results are better. Therefore the Ruukki laser sheet developed especially for the laser cutting process has an extremely fine and millscale surface, generated by careful temperature control during the hot-rolling process.

The micro scale adheres firmly to the sheet surface. A surface like this guarantees extraordinary laser cutting results that cannot be obtained with any conventional or blasted sheets.

Ruukki laser is ideal for unmanned production processes

As already mentioned before, the constant mechanical properties and the tight thickness tolerances make this laser sheet ideal for an interference-free unmanned production process and for automated subsequent treatment. As the mechanical properties and the thicknesses of the Ruukki laser sheets remain nearly unchanged, an interference-free unmanned production process is guaranteed.
