REIMOTEC- New developments in high-performance machinery for the production of strapping tapes

For more than forty years now, REIFENHÄUSER have been developing, planning and manufacturing machines and equipment for the production of monofilaments and strapping tapes in Germany. Specifically for this group of products, in 2001 the REIMOTEC subsidiary was founded which is located in Ober-Abtsteinach near Heidelberg, Germany. REIMOTEC continues REIFFENHÄUSER's success story.

REIMOTEC is a system supplier of monofilament and strapping tape production equipment. This means that REIMOTEC does not only supply the equipment but the entire engineering and extensive know-how in process technology. This complete package is one of the reasons why REIMOTEC has become the market leader in the monofilaments and strapping tapes area.

With its large number of machines sold to customers all over the world, REIMOTEC is a major player with respect to advanced technologies in the manufacture of monofilaments and strapping tapes.

PET strapping tape replaces steel hoops

Up to now, steel hoops, due to their stability, have been considered the only reliable material for transport packaging and tightening strap for heavy goods. For this reason, as much as 500,000 tonnes of steel hoops for packaging were produced in Europe in the year 2000. It is not lastly due to the steel crisis that polyester (PET) strapping tape has continued to replace steel hoops.

As compared to steel hoops, PET strapping tapes meanwhile offer a range of considerable benefits:
The stability of PET tapes is comparable to that of steel hoops.
The expansion of 7 - 15 % is larger than that of steel hoops, which makes the PET tapes more elastic and thus also suitable for the packing of goods whose volume may change due to heat or vibration and shock.
Due to its higher elasticity, the PET tape does not damage the edges of the goods packed.
PET does not rust, which is a considerable advantage in particular for the packing of synthetic fibres and cotton bales.
The risk of injury is considerably lower than that of steel hoops.
Handling of coils becomes easier.

Due to the use of recycled PET bottles in the manufacture of strapping tapes, PET tapes are meanwhile considerably less expensive than steel hoops.

As due to hydrolytic degradation recycled flakes have a wide molecular weight distribution and a lower molecular weight than new raw material during the first extrusion step, it was not possible before to manufacture high-quality strapping tapes from 100% recycled bottle flakes.

To solve this problem, additives were used or recycled flakes were mixed with virgin material. The disad-vantage, however, are the higher costs of raw materials.

As early as 2001, REIMOTEC developed and patented a technology which allows the manufacture of a high-quality strapping tape made of 100% recycled bottle flakes.

Innovative twin-screw technology

The heart of these machines is the corotating twin-screw extruder, the "Reitruder". Through the application of this new and innovative twin-screw technology and future-oriented equipment and operating concept, REIMOTEC stands out in the manufacture of PET strapping tape equipment. With this new development REIMOTEC has set new standards in the strapping tape industry and has given new impetus to the market.

By mid-2008, the 20th strapping tape machine with twin-screw extruder will have been installed.
With the installed capacity of about 70,000 tonnes per year, about 25% of the total annual PET strapping tape production capacity of 300,000 tonnes will be successfully produced using this technology. This clearly shows that the investment in innovative and modern technology will ensure sustainable economic success.

Tape Control System (TSC)

An advanced automation concept also includes the continuous and automatic recording and logging of the tape width and thickness. For the production of all commonly available types of tapes, the width and thickness of up to 16 tapes can be recorded, statistically evaluated and logged inline and in real time.

Trico strapping tape - the 3-layered strapping tape

The success story of the plastic strapping tape is characterised by the availability of inexpensive recycled PET materials.

If it is possible to manufacture high-quality strapping tapes from low-grade and inexpensive recycling materials (bottle flakes), the substitution potential will rise and steel will be replaced by plastic. One technically interesting possibility is the manufacture of three-layered strapping tapes (Trico technology).
The core of such tapes is made of low-grade recycled materials (e.g. PET multilayer ground materials). The upper and lower coating layer made of higher-grade recycled materials ensures good weld ability, good break resistance of the edges and the required mechanical properties.

In its financial year 200/2008, REIMOTEC will deliver 30 monofilament and strapping tape machines and thus realise a turnover of € 40 million.
