Die Preisverleihung fand am Dienstagmorgen im Naturkundemuseum Potsdam statt, wo eine lebende Emys orbicularis die Gäste der Preisverleihung überraschte. Mit der Emys zeichnet die sechsköpfige Jury ab Januar 2013 monatlich Sachbuchtitel der Kinder- und Jugendliteratur aus, die besonders, fachlich kompetent und ansprechend aufbereitet sind. Die Preisträger erhalten eine Urkunde und eine signierte Illustration einer Emys. Diese Illustration, die auch als Logo für den Sachbuchpreis Verwendung findet, wurde von Regina Kehn, die als Illustratorin von Kinder- und Jugendbüchern bekannt ist, gestaltet.
