The number of existing PROFINET nodes and systems is growing rapidly. PI (PROFIBUS & PROFINET) is now publishing an installation guideline for PROFINET to ensure that these systems can be set up properly from the start.
Experience shows that 80% of system failures can be traced back to electromechanical faults e.g. unprofessional cabling, independent of the automation system. A majority of these errors can be avoided if installers comply with relevant handling rules during system construction.
The new installation guideline for PROFINET increases the quality of the respective installation. Valuable information for the proper setup of systems supports installers when carrying out work in the field. As with the installation guideline for PROFIBUS, great effort was made to ensure the readability and user friendliness of the PROFINET guideline. The easy-to-understand text is limited to only what is essential. Direct speech provides clear instructions to the installer. Images are deliberately rendered as drawings and show only the elements necessary for understanding. In this way, the reader can see at a glance what is important. This prevents misinterpretations from occurring.
The installation guideline was designed to be suitable for on-site use in the A5 format and can be purchased for €18 from the PI Support Center.
After proper installation, the setup must be tested. To support this process, PI is currently also creating a commissioning guideline for PROFINET. It contains information on checking existing cabling with simple means, presents a variety of measurement equipment and describes how to carry out inspection measurements. Templates for creating inspection test reports are included. Commissioning and troubleshooting are described step by step. The commissioning guideline will be available soon.
A planning guideline completes the PROFINET trilogy. The last one deals with all aspects of planning PROFINET systems and presents the required components. The target date for completion is the end of 2009.
