Drive technology with PROFIBUS and PROFINET is ideally positioned
The "PROFIdrive on PROFIsafe" document makes available a standardized interface that provides functional safety when using drives as well as functions that increase availability during production. The document specifies an interface for enabling and disabling safety functions for drives as well as their parameter assignment and configuration. It is based on the specifications of the PROFIdrive and PROFIsafe profiles.
Drives are generally among the highest consumers of electrical energy in production processes. With the introduction of the PROFIenergy profile, PROFINET drives in production processes can now be operated with time-controlled shutdowns such that consumption of electrical energy is minimized.
To support development of products, the Industrial NETworx Community (www.industrialnetworx.com/profidrive-profile) has added another application class to the source code of the PROFIdrive profile. The new version, which is to be launched at the end of 2013, will now support isochronous applications of PROFINET with IRT. In addition, the team is working on an expansion for controllers, which will significantly reduce the implementation effort. Manufacturers of smaller controllers and motion controllers are the focus of this effort.
The profile tester supports implementation of the PROFIdrive interface for PROFINET-based drives. It can be used to perform tests during the development phase. The test suite is comparable to that used in certification laboratories. The tool is available as a free download to all PI members.
PI is thus ideally prepared for new market requirements and especially for those coming from the Industry 4.0 environment. This has been recognized by numerous manufacturers that are working not only on integrating PROFINET in drives but also on integrating other technologies such as PROFIenergy or PROFIdrive in their products.
