Hexacomb® creates new protective packaging category with paper-based HexFlex(TM) flexible structure
Unlike most paper-based protective solutions which achieve their properties from rigid facings, HexFlex(TM) is made from a honeycomb core which is sandwiched between a traditional layer of kraft paper or grey board on one side and a cellulose-based, non-woven material on the other. The cellulose layer not only gives the structure the flexibility to bend and form around corners, but its soft, non-abrasive texture is a plus for those applications needing additional surface protection.
"We've created a strong, flexible structure that is in a protective packaging category all by itself," explained Jeff Kellar, president, Hexacomb. "In addition to its performance properties, the paper-based construction offers companies a way to achieve performance requirements without sacrificing their environmental objectives."
This product is ideal for any application which requires protective material to curve around product or pallet load corners. Or for those seeking a paper alternative to petroleum-based solutions.
HexFlex(TM) is also a good substitute for wood in pallet cover applications due to its lighter weight, recycling ease and labor benefits (no splinters, strains). Further, HexFlex(TM) can drape over the top of the load which prevents the pallet strapping from cutting into the upper-most product layers.
"The uses for HexFlex(TM) are almost limitless. Because of its flexibility and die-cutting capabilities, we also can envision endcaps and other blocking and bracing protective packaging structures. It's a great alternative to expanded polystyrene and particle board," Kellar said.
Markets and applications include: automotive, e-commerce, consumer electronics, glass, cosmetics, fulfillment, housewares, beverages, pharma/medical, industrial components, furniture, metal rolls, etc.
Hexacomb® honeycomb is made from kraft paper (linerboard) and water-based adhesives. The paper is sliced into strips which are glued together to form a pattern of nested hexagonal cells similar in appearance to a beehive honeycomb. The vertical-cell orientation allows the deck to handle heavy loads without a loss of strength. The water-based adhesives used to join the components enable the entire structure to be recycled with other paper and paperboard products.
"Currently, HexFlex(TM) is only available only available in Europe, but we hope to extend the product's availability in the future," Kellar said.
