Mit dem neuen Teilchen-Beschleuniger am CERN in der Schweiz kann der Urknall im Labor nachgestellt werden - zumindest für einen kurzen Moment. In dieser oft als "Weltmaschine" titulierten Anlage werden Atomkerne mit nahezu Lichtgeschwindigkeit aufeinander geschossen. In den Bruchstücken solcher hochenergetischer Kollisionen erhofft man sich Hinweise auf weitere theoretisch vorhergesagte Elementarteilchen zu finden. Insbesondere soll endlich der Nachweis des "Higgs-Teilchens" erbracht werden, hängt doch von dessen Existenz die grundsätzliche Richtigkeit des in der Forschergemeinde allgemein akzeptierten Standardmodells der Materie ab.
