The smallest cw laser in the world

Regensburg, (PresseBox) - At Laser Fair 2007 World of Photonics (June 18 to 21, Neue Messe Munich) OSRAM Opto Semiconductors will be showcasing the world’s smallest and first surface mountable (SMT) high-power laser for continuous wave (cw) mode. The laser is dustproof, powerful and cost-effective, making it ideal for volume applications in industry, the automotive sector and medical systems.

This tiny 2.5 mm high laser has a footprint of only 6.0 x 4.5 mm². The dustproof, electrically insulated package has an impressively small thermal resistance of just about 2.5 K/W. This tiny unit is designed for an output of up to 6 W and emits light at a wavelength of 810 nm. A prism directs the light so that the laser emits all its light upwards. It can therefore be placed anywhere on a circuit board, not just at the edge. Its base has good thermal conductivity so if it is soldered directly on a metal core board its heat loss can be removed extremely efficiently.

As an SMT component the laser is compatible with modern production processes such as reflow soldering. It is capable of withstanding harsh ambient conditions in industrial applications and in automobile environments. Its operating temperature ranges from -40 to +100 °C. The fact that it can be surface mounted makes it suitable for volume applications such as night vision systems, CCTV, traffic monitoring and medical applications such as epilation. An external beam expander can be used to protect the eyes.
