OPTICOM and DVC Digitalvideo premiere Audio/Video QoE Analyzer for IPTV and Mobile TV Benchmarks at NAB

OPTICOM's PEVQ going to be recommended International Test Standard

(PresseBox) (Erlangen / Las Vegas, ) OPTICOM - the Perceptual Quality Experts from Germany - today announced their new PEVQ Analyzer, an HD capable Video Recorder with comprehensive perceptual audio and video analysis capabilities. Perceptual Evaluation of Video Quality (PEVQ) measures the subjectively perceived quality of video sequences based on the 5-point MOS (mean opinion score) quality scale widely used to characterize the quality as perceived by human subscribers. Peered with PEAQ, OPTICOM's renowned ITU standard for perceptual audio quality analysis, the new device marks the sole tool on the market to deliver an audio/video quality metrics in the form of a pair of standardized MOS KPIs. The concurrent audio/video quality analysis is also capable to track important lip-sync artifacts common to packet loss issues in next generation networks' services.

Unlike a range of network management tools devised today by industry players, PEVQ is a metrics that analyzes a transmitted and degraded video signal by a human visual model and thus represents a true objective Quality-of-Experience (QoE) measure. In fact, PEVQ provides the potential of an objective expert assessing IPTV performance issues in relation to incumbent TV satellite and cable services: Equipment manufacturers, network operators and service providers can analyze QoE issues and optimize pre-deployment networks to avoid customer's dissatisfaction, which otherwise might lead to complain or churn.

In the course of International Standardization, in 2008 the Video Quality Experts Group ( completed a huge series of 41 validation tests run across twelve different labs in Europe, USA and Asia. OPTICOM's PEVQ showed superior performance and is going to be proposed for standardization.

Michael Keyhl, founder and CEO of OPTICOM says: "With our new video quality measure, our distinguished team of perceptual experts once more achieved the technological summit. We are delighted to see that PEVQ is going to be recommended for inclusion in an International Recommendation." With regard to the new product collaboration with DVC he adds: "We welcome DVC's hardware platform to release the power of PEVQ to SD and HD video networks, enabling us to offer our customers short time-to-market to get their hands on the new test standard."

DVC's CEO Harald Naether adds: "We appreciate the collaboration with OPTICOM, the leading provider of perceptual test technology, not only presenting us with a value-add to our range of high performance video ClipRecorders but in fact offering our installed base of academic and professional broadcast users to quickly upgrade to the state-of-the-art video analysis capability."

PEVQ is an accurate, reliable and fast video quality measurement technology, developed by OPTICOM. PEVQ can be ideally applied to test video telephony, video conferencing, video streaming, and IPTV applications. The new PEVQ Analyzer evaluates the quality of multimedia (QCIF, CIF, VGA) and SD and HD video formats based on perceptual video quality-of-experience measurement. The system supports synchronous SD and HD record and play over a range of interfaces (HD-SDI, DVI) and comes with a high-performance hard disk array.

PEVQ is available under OEM license, too, and has already been adopted by a range of industry players (see

OPTICOM GmbH is the leading vendor for voice, audio and video quality measurement technology and OEM products for mobile and IP based network testing. With PSQM, PESQ, PEAQ and P.563, the pioneers in perceptual quality testing have been providing by now four international world- class standards for voice and audio quality measurement since the foundation of OPTICOM as a spin-off from Fraunhofer's MP3 development team in 1995.

After the great success with PESQ - the International Standard for voice quality testing, the experts from Germany now also source PEVQ, the new industry standard to measure a perceptual video quality KPI for streaming, conferencing and messaging applications. PEVQ has been adopted under license by major vendors in the industry. OPTICOM's proven OEM technology can be found in most state-of-the-art products of leading T&M vendors, see also
