Open Europe responds to conclusions of EU summit

Open Europe has responded to the conclusions from the European Council of EU leaders, taking place today and yesterday

London, (PresseBox) - Open Europe's Director Mats Persson said:

"While some of the proposals agreed today are welcome, EU leaders' continued preference for burying their heads in the sand, rather than dealing with the root causes of the eurozone crisis and the sluggish EU economy, does little to inspire confidence."

"The market reaction has made it clear that bail-outs and the 'pact for the euro' have failed to put the eurozone on solid ground. It's now time to tackle Europe's problems head on. Portugal, along with other struggling countries, should restructure its debt, rather than tread water with the help of EU bail-outs, and Europe's sick banking system should be flushed out. Then Europe can get on with the radical agenda for growth and trade that it urgently needs. Ducking these challenges now will only make them more difficult in future."

"From Lisbon to Helsinki we're seeing national democracies clashing with the conditions and demands attached to euro membership. We are fast reaching a watershed moment for both the eurozone and the EU."
