TDC Selects Nortel as Key Supplier for Nordics Next Generation Network

Nortel DWDM Technology Helps TDC Meet Demand for Bandwidth-Hungry Multimedia Services

(PresseBox) (Frankfurt am Main, ) TDC, Denmark´s leading provider of communications solutions, has selected a Nortel(1) (TSX: NT)(NYSE: NT) advanced next-generation optical network solution to help meet the growing demand in Denmark and the Nordic region for bandwidth-hungry multimedia services such as IPTV, VoIP and enterprise Virtual Private Networks (VPNs).

"We selected Nortel´s DWDM technology because they are among the industry leaders in this advanced technology and their solution supports our business mission by cost-effectively delivering the highest levels of flexible bandwidth to support current and future needs," said Mads A. Rasmussen, vice president, Network Technology, TDC Solutions.

As a key supplier for TDC´s next-generation network, Nortel will deploy its DWDM solution - Common Photonic Layer with Optical Multiservice Edge 6500 (OME6500) service platform - to enhance and expand the existing TDC network. The network currently covers the major metropolitan areas of the Nordic region. The solution also allows for expansion into TDC´s European affiliates and provides a path to adaptive all-optical intelligent networking. This enhanced network functionality will give TDC added service capacity, flexibility and network agility while reducing operating costs.

"Having TDC - a company with more than 15 million customers in Europe - choose our adaptive all-optical intelligent networking solution is a significant win for Nortel," said Darryl Edwards, president, Europe, Middle East and Africa (EMEA), Nortel. "It´s a good example of how operators recognize that Nortel solutions for next-generation networks can give competitive advantage by cost-effectively providing the highest levels of flexibility for delivering new services that require higher bandwidths."

TDC´s DWDM network is important for its regional growth strategy of serving business customers with high-quality, high-speed, mission critical and hosted services. The network will support additional revenue-earning Carrier´s Carrier and enterprise wavelength services that fit into the International Telecommunication Union (ITU) Optical Transport Network (OTN) standard and also support 10 Gigabit Ethernet services.

The network build-out is based on products from Nortel´s Metro Ethernet Networking portfolio, including the Common Photonic Layer and Optical Multi-service Edge 6500. An adaptive intelligent all optical network is created by including key solution components such as eROADM (enhanced Remote Optical Add Drop Multiplexer) and fully tunable transponders that are equipped with eDCO (electronic Dynamically Compensating Optics.)

eROADMs enable rapid changes to network service and traffic patterns by allowing TDC to dynamically add and drop optical wavelengths without terminating them. eDCO allows wavelengths to be routed through the network independent of fiber dispersion and network topology, and supports a reach of 2,000km without regeneration. This next-generation DWDM network delivers the required capacity and service agility for TDC to cost-effectively deliver new bandwidth-hungry services wherever they are required.
