Frontier Deploys Nortel Metro Ethernet Solution for its Live First Field Application
Backbone Transport Technology Will Enhance Network Performance
One of the nation´s largest rural communications providers offering telephone, television, Internet and wireless data access services, Frontier is an early adopter of Nortel´s Provider Backbone Transport (PBT) technology. PBT allows operators to determine the precise paths taken by information as it traverses the network, resulting in a cost-effective and enhanced operational environment.
"The Metro Ethernet technology offers Frontier flexibility and cost-containment along with needed carrier attributes," said Michael Golob, vice president, Engineering and Technology at Frontier. "Those don´t often come in the same package. Frontier takes pride in consistently delivering excellent value and superior customer care. Nortel´s Metro Ethernet technology and management tools offer promising ways to provide superior products to our customers and meet future network requirements."
"Frontier is taking the lead in its innovative use of Ethernet as a foundation of its service infrastructure," said Philippe Morin, president, Metro Ethernet Networks, Nortel. "Delivering highly reliable, scalable and flexible services within the demand of service level agreements to ensure their customers needs are met with certainty is key in this market and is a fundamental attribute of our PBB and PBT technologies. We believe Frontier will be even better positioned to exceed the needs of its customers with this solution."
Nortel´s solution, based on the Nortel Metro Ethernet Routing Switch, will allow Frontier to provide high-bandwidth services, such as video and streaming media as well as advanced business services, including residential services and wireless backhaul.
Provider Backbone Bridging (PBB) capabilities would join Frontiers´ existing Ethernet "QinQ" deployments, adding scale and resiliency to the network. As the technology proves itself in this initial rollout, wider deployments are expected throughout the network.
The latest release of the Metro Ethernet Routing Switch 8600 includes enhancements targeted for carrier grade services, such as new Small Form Pluggable (SFP) interfaces; controlled software upgrades; enhanced quality of service (QoS) support; improved resiliency that includes Multi-Link Trunking (MLT) for ELAN services; and Multi-Link Trunking interworking with PBT. Together these features allow optimized support for multicast-intense applications such as video distribution and IP-DSLAM backhaul.
