Nokia Siemens Networks completes the fusion of Austria’s T-Mobile and tele.ring networks following the operators’ merger
Successful network migration at unprecedented scale and timing
The seamless network integration – of an unprecedented scale and complexity – took place within a very challenging timeframe of about four months, with the network operating commercially all the time and without any noticeable disturbances for the users of both brands. The network merging activities, capacity expansion and upgrading were all conducted at the same time.
The result is a fully upgraded single physical network serving now about 3 million users – 2 million of T-Mobile subscribers and 1 million of tele.ring customers. Now the empowered network also offers improved quality and coverage for all tele.ring users.
The project consisted in the replacement and upgrade of a total of 1,300 base stations of the 2G network, an upgrade of the existing T-Mobile Austria core network equipment to increase the network’s capacity as well as a migration of tele.ring’s prepaid customers to a charging platform at T-Mobile Austria, already installed by Nokia Siemens Networks.
“The close cooperation with Nokia Siemens Networks in Austria was one of the key success factors of the high quality of the network merger,“ says Christian Walzel, Vice President Technology/Head of Technical Merger at T-Mobile Austria. “I appreciate the proactive work of Nokia Siemens Networks during the whole project. Nokia Siemens Networks delivered high quality under extreme time pressure.”
"This is the first time all over the world that such an enormous and complex merging of networks is conducted. In only a couple of months the two networks have been merged into one,” states Manfred Kilga, Account Manager for T-Mobile Austria at Nokia Siemens Networks. “I am very proud that T-Mobile Austria – which has been our business partner (we being Siemens then) since they started operation in 1996 – has entrusted us with that challenging project. It clearly shows our partner’s satisfaction and trust in Nokia Siemens Networks qualities of accurate planning as well as in professional implementation.”
