NGMN Demonstrates Feasibility of Converged Operations

Frankfurt, (PresseBox) - The feasibility of meeting the converged operations requirements published by the NGMN Alliance project NGCOR (Next Generation Converged Operations Requirements) was first demonstrated in May 2013 and an expanded version of that demonstration will take place at the TM Forum Digital Disruption conference in San Jose 28th-31st October. The demonstration is a "TM Forum Catalyst Project", titled "Enabling Digital Services on a Converged Network". It shows how the currently isolated islands of operational control that exist in today's cellular networks can be converged to dramatically reduce OPEX, CAPEX, and TTM, while improving QOS.

One of today's main Operator challenges is the management of a variety of network and service production infrastructures, from mobile, fixed network, packet core, and varieties of BSS/OSS systems all in a multi-vendor environment. The NGMN Alliance project NGCOR aims to reduce complexity and cost, and seeks to obtain more flexibility in the area of network management through the application of innovative technology and standardised interfaces between the Telco infrastructure and the OSS (Operations Support Systems) and BSS (Business Support Systems). To assist an Umbrella Information Model (3GPP TS 28.620) has been jointly elaborated and approved by 3GPP and TM Forum, and is based on the requirements defined by project NGCOR.

"Efficient converged operations are key to meeting the challenges mobile network operators face managing expenses, providing high quality of service and getting new innovative services to market quickly. The successful demonstration of technical feasibility of Converged Operations is a very important milestone. We see this demonstration growing into products and services to support our industry in the very near future" says NGMN Operating Officer Dr. Peter Meissner.

The TM Forum Catalyst "Enabling Digital Services on a Converged Network" demonstrates the successful implementation of the Umbrella Information Model and shows how this approach leads to more efficient and enhanced converged network operations and new service introduction. In addition to previous showcases run by the NGMN NGCOR project, the expanded demo in San Jose adds the Core EMS and Service Initiation functions. The showcase has been developed by NGMN Partners and leading industry players like Comarch, Deutsche Telekom, Orange, Juniper Networks, Orchestral Networks, Telecom Italia, Telefonica, and ZTE.
