The National Safety Council applauds Congresswoman Debbie Dingell’s introduction of the Honoring Abbas Family Legacy to Terminate (HALT) Drunk Driving Act to establish a new requirement by Sept. 30, 2024, for motor vehicles to be equipped with advanced alcohol detection devices. These devices use technology to detect the presence of alcohol in a driver by measuring the driver’s blood-alcohol concentration – or BAC. If the BAC is above the legal limit, the technology prevents the vehicle from operating. The bill was introduced in memory of the Abbas family of Michigan, tragically killed by a drunk driver in January.
