National Safety Council Statement on HALT Drunk Driving Act

(PresseBox) (Itasca, IL, )
The National Safety Council applauds Congresswoman Debbie Dingell’s introduction of the Honoring Abbas Family Legacy to Terminate (HALT) Drunk Driving Act to establish a new requirement by Sept. 30, 2024, for motor vehicles to be equipped with advanced alcohol detection devices. These devices use technology to detect the presence of alcohol in a driver by measuring the driver’s blood-alcohol concentration – or BAC. If the BAC is above the legal limit, the technology prevents the vehicle from operating. The bill was introduced in memory of the Abbas family of Michigan, tragically killed by a drunk driver in January.

Alcohol-impaired driving continues to be one of the biggest safety issues on U.S. roads, killing 10,874 people in 2017, an increase of 3.6 percent from 2016. NSC stands ready to work with Congresswoman Dingell to pass this legislation, which will signal further dedication by lawmakers to end these needless deaths. Vehicle manufacturers don’t have to wait for legislation to pass, however, to incorporate these devices. NSC encourages manufacturers to integrate them as soon as possible.

We know the solutions to saving lives on our roads. Thank you, Congresswoman Dingell, for showing the will to implement one of them.
