2017 International Transport Forum at the OECD: Leipzig/Halle Airport hosts official Side Event "Aid and Relief Logistics" at the ITF's Summit 2017
Following a guided tour of Leipzig/Halle Airport, Europe’s fifth-largest cargo hub, the international participants enjoyed lectures given by representatives from well-known companies and organizations. The complex supply chains for humanitarian aid transports were the subject of discussions from the point of view of the different players involved, including aid organizations, logistics specialists, airports and airlines.
The participants also had the opportunity to witness typical loading procedures in aircraft belonging to the Volga-Dnepr Group, an Antonov 124.
“Leipzig/Halle has repeatedly been the venue for humanitarian missions to crisis areas and regions affected by natural disasters. That’s why we know all about the challenges of transporting goods in time-sensitive situations and were happy to be one of the organizers of such a prestigious OECD event,” said Johannes Jähn, the Board Spokesman at Mitteldeutsche Flughafen AG and Managing Director of Flughafen Leipzig/Halle GmbH, explaining the situation, and added, “This event provided us with an excellent platform to show guests from all over the world which challenges the different players need to overcome in order to be able to help people in need quickly and efficiently.”
Leipzig/Halle Airport: 24/7 for cargo flights and direct links to road and rail networks
Leipzig/Halle Airport is the fifth largest air cargo hub in Europe and handled more than 1.05 million tons of freight in 2016. About 352,051 tons of freight passed through the airport between January and April this year, 4.6 percent more than in the same period in the previous year.
Leipzig/Halle Airport has a 24-hour operating permit for cargo traffic and for flights involving humanitarian goods and police or military operations. The customs services and other public authorities, which enable rapid processing, also operate around the clock at the site.
PortGround, the specialist for freight and ground services, which is part of Mitteldeutsche Flughafen AG, maintains a refrigerated warehouse with direct access to the apron area at the airport and complete aircraft loads of tempera-ture-sensitive goods can be stored there.
The airport also has direct links to the trans-European motorway and railway networks and has space and capacity reserves, which offer customers planning reliability in the long term too.
DHL has been operating its European hub at the site since 2008. Leipzig/Halle Airport is also the home base for AeroLogic, a joint venture involving DHL Ex-press and Lufthansa Cargo. Two Antonov 124-100 aircraft have been perma-nently stationed at Leipzig/Halle as part of the SALIS Project (Strategic Airlift International Solution) since March 2006.
The airport is also the home base for a subsidiary of the Volga-Dnepr Group, Aircraft Maintenance and Engineering Service GmbH (AMTES GmbH), which maintains a servicing base for Antonov 124 aircraft and other western planes at the site.
More than 40 cargo airlines operated flights to over 220 destinations from Leipzig/Halle during 2016.
Flughafen Leipzig/Halle GmbH is a subsidiary of Mitteldeutsche Flughafen AG. It handled approx. 2.2 million passengers and 1.05 million tons of freight in 2016. Leipzig/Halle Air-port is therefore Germany’s second-largest for cargo and the number 5 in Europe.
The airport is linked to the A 9 and A 14 motorways and has a railway station, which forms an integral part of the central terminal. Passengers can reach the check-in area directly from the station and the multi-storey car park.
