Solid growth, significantly improved results, healthy order books and positive prospects

Result of the Mikron Group for the 2007 financial year

(PresseBox) (Biel, ) The Mikron Group, a specialist in the production of machining and assembly systems, posted net earnings of CHF 7.2 million in the 2007 financial year (+80.0%). Operating profit (EBIT) climbed to CHF 11.8 million, an improvement of +31.1%. Order intake reached CHF 311.5 million (+36.2%) and sales CHF 265.3 million (+8.4%). Mikron s goal for the 2008 financial year is to achieve another step forward in growth and to significantly increase its operating profit (EBIT).

The business environment in 2007 was highly favourable, and customers investment activity was correspondingly high. Many customers expanded their production capacity appreciably during the year, which had a positive impact both on Mikron s machine business and on its tools business.

Significant improvement in net earnings and operating profit

At CHF 7.2 million, net earnings exceeded the previous year. One of the Mikron Group s most important goals is to increase its operating profit (EBIT). Although operating profit was markedly improved at CHF 11.8 million, the increase still fell short of the Group s target given the increase in volume.

The Machining Technology division posted a very clear improvement on the unsatisfactory result of the previous year, which had been impacted by one-time charges. However, orders for machines on which new machining processes were being deployed for the first time and orders for applications in new market segments generated additional expenditures.

The Assembly Technology division's results were lower year-on-year. It should be noted, though, that the division's main production site in Switzerland achieved another very satisfactory result. In contrast, its US production site caused a loss of around CHF 2.0 million. Appropriate corrective measures have already been initiated.

Order intake at very high level

As the Group announced at the end of January, order intake was up significantly on the previous year (+36.6%) and also in excess of expectations. The Machining Technology division(+24.2%) posted healthy orders over its entire product range. The Assembly Technology division (+51.4%) reported a record order intake. The distribution of repeat orders and new customer orders or new applications was highly satisfactory.

Further increase in sales

At CHF 265.3 million, net sales improved once again on the previous year's good result(+8.4%). This growth in net sales was generated by both divisions more or less equally. As in the previous year, the accentuated order intake resulted in a very high peak in capacity utilization for the Assembly Technology division. The strongest market segments in terms of sales included the automotive supply industry (41%), the medical technology and pharmaceutical industry (19%) and, in 2007 in particular, the electronics industry (11%). The Mikron Group generated around three quarters of its sales with customers in Europe, primarily in Germany.

2008 off to a good start Both divisions have begun the new financial year with a gratifying level of orders on their books.
The industrial environment shows signs of continuing buoyancy even if project activity at the same level as 2007 cannot be expected. The Mikron Group plans to focus its efforts on a further step forward in growth and on significantly increasing its operating profit (EBIT).

100 years of Mikron

Mikron is celebrating its centenary in 2008. In a rapidly changing industrial landscape the company has reached a milestone that cannot be taken for granted. Founded on 20 April 1908 as Maschinenfabrik Mikron AG in Biel, Switzerland, Mikron has developed into a globally active group of companies and a leading provider of customer-specific machining and assembly systems. Precision, innovative drive and quality are values that date back to Mikron s founding and which are upheld today in the same way as they were right at the start.
