ProCare Protein Check provides immediate feedback on reprocessing quality

Rapid and simple check on cleaning results in CSSD

(PresseBox) (Gütersloh, ) A fast and simple method of checking cleaning performance on instruments is now possible with the ProCare Protein Check to be launched by Miele at the end of 2012. Each set consists of three pens, each filled with a red test fluid. After washing and disinfection, the fluid is simply applied to the instruments under review and provides a prompt indication as to whether cleaning was sufficient within around 3 minutes.

A dispenser tip only 4 mm across allows the test fluid to be applied with precision on the parts of instrument most likely to harbour residual proteins. After a contact time of 3 minutes, the fluid is then rinsed off for 3 seconds under running water. Any protein residue still on the instrument is immediately indicated by a colour change. An indicator scale, provided together with the set, helps gauge the severity of contamination.

The ProCare Protein Check is particularly practical when it comes to performing routine checks on medical devices as the test fluid can be applied directly to the areas under scrutiny. Handling is extremely simple and as the test is only performed after thermal disinfection, the last stage in a programme, its use does not interrupt proceedings in CSSD.

In addition to the new Miele ProCare Protein Check, the tried-and-tested Miele Test Kit will continue to be available for quantitative residual protein measurements. According to a recommendation contained in the DIN EN ISO 15883 standard, the latter should be used at least once a year in the course of machine revalidation. This more complicated approach, however, involves interrupting the process before the thermal disinfection stage is reached. In practice, this poses considerable problems. Checking reprocessing results on completion of a full cycle, on the other hand, provides fast and reliable assurance by determining whether residue on instruments is from process chemicals or is protein-based, for example from bodily fluids such as blood.

The combination of Miele Test Kit and the new Miele ProCare Protein Check for regular routine testing represents maximum protection in the reprocessing of sterile supplies and hence optimum patient safety.
