Miele makes the running of general surgical practices simpler and safer

Fully automatic instrument reprocessing documentation

According to German legislation, general surgeons are required to wash, disinfect and sterilise their instruments and document this in a gap-free and manipulation-proof manner and to archive records for 30 years. The new SegoSoft Miele Edition software guarantees that this requirement is met without burdening the surgery team with unnecessary paperwork. This system sets standards in terms of safety and efficiency and is further complemented by SegoLabel Miele Edition, a software programme which speeds up the printing of sterile supply labels. Both software versions are to be launched in 4Q10.

The new SegoSoft Miele Edition documentation software excels in terms of ease of use and process protocol clarity. All the important process data from thermal disinfectors and sterilisers are fully automatically recorded and documented. At the end of a programme and after a visual inspection, the user approves instruments for re-use and documents this with a signature and a password. The approval of instruments using the software is faster and simpler, taking less than 10 seconds in each case. Alongside gap-free process documentation, routine checks can also be documented and reminders of pending service appointments issued. In the event of the need for maintenance, users can, for example, change filters and record the date when refitted. Documentation represents a significant contribution towards quality management in general surgeries.

The authenticity of Miele software data, for instance in third-party liability cases, results from three components: Firstly, the SegoSoft Miele Edition meets all requirements pursuant to the Medical Device Directive and guidelines issued by Germany's Robert Koch Institute which have the status of legislation and are cited by assessors and investigators. Secondly, the documentation is protected by an advanced digital signature which would rapidly and reliably uncover any attempt at manipulation. Thirdly, the PDF/A document format complies with ISO 19005-1 in ensuring that protocols are legible, evaluatable and legally validatable even after decades. In terms of data security, Miele is setting market standards and is offering general surgeons the legal security they deserve.

If desired, data can be transferred by USB stick, laptop link-up or via a network. The software excels in terms of a fast and intuitive user interface, allowing the practice team to devote its full attention to core duties. A further advantage of SegoSoft Miele Edition lies in the hardware: Electronic signatures are generated automatically, obviating the need for additional hardware such as a signature pad.

The hard- and software portfolio is neatly rounded off by 'SegoLabel-Miele Edition'. This new software enables labels to be printed in next to no time for use on packaged sterile supplies. The labels are created using a special printer after sterilisation. They include the batch number, the creation date for monitoring expiry dates and the name of the member of staff responsible. Optionally, information on contents can also be included. Labelling using software and barcodes also allows process data to be assigned to patient data for full traceability from instruments to patients.
