Cleaning and disinfection of robotic instruments in Miele decontamination units

Miele's Robotvario validated for the cleaning of Intuitive Surgical's EndoWrist instruments

(PresseBox) (Gütersloh, ) From Medica 2012 on, the cleaning and disinfection of 8 mm EndoWrist robotic-assisted instruments will also be possible in Miele's large-chamber PG 8527/28 decontamination units. Up to 6 EndoWrist instruments can be thoroughly reprocessed together with other accessories during operations in a newly designed load carriage. The Miele Robotvario system is now validated by Intuitive Surgical Inc. (California), the world market leader in the field of robotic-assisted surgery, for the cleaning and disinfection of their 8 mm EndoWrist instruments.

In the new E 928 mobile unit, two connections on each 8 mm instrument ensure that the interior of the shaft and control casing are irrigated independently of each other. An additional row of nozzles ensures the targeted cleaning of the distal ends of the instruments, which are often heavily soiled. In order to prevent residue from the wash liquor from entering the instrument interiors, micro-filters have been fitted in the supply line upstream from the connections on shafted instruments. These filters are easily removable for cleaning.

Additional accessories used in robotic-assisted surgery are accommodated and cleaned in the lower reaches of the load carriage, including for instance trocars and trocar sleeves. Various injector nozzles are available for securely connecting instruments to the water supply. This allows load configurations to meet users' needs. The same washer-disinfector can also be used to reprocess ophthalmological or microvasive instruments, as needed.

As Miele's Robotvario process is based on the use of enzymatic detergents, all instruments are first pre-treated for 30 minutes with Mucapur Robotvario detergent prior to reprocessing. This detergent was specially formulated by Miele's partner Merz Hygiene GmbH to digest organic residue particularly efficiently and is designed specifically to meet the needs of Miele's reprocessing cycle for robotic-assisted instruments. The machine-based process takes slightly longer than one hour, and when used in conjunction with Intuitive's existing instructions for use, culminates in thermal disinfection.

Proof of the efficacy of the Robotvario system has been furnished in clinical tests and laboratory experiments with the G 7836 washer-disinfector and the E 428 mobile unit performed by the wfk Institute for Applied Research in Krefeld, Germany. The results confirm the excellent cleaning and disinfection of instruments using the Miele process.
