Catharina Hospital in Eindhoven rigged out with Miele's complete System4Med

Reprocessing of large loads and bulky items to the highest of standards

(PresseBox) (Gütersloh, ) A better command of instrument reprocessing combined with improved quality and cost control: For the directors of the Catharina Hospital in Eindhoven, these were the most compelling reasons for opting for an in-house CSSD operation. Consequently, the existing unit was renovated, refurbished and rigged out with latest medical technology from Miele. Planning, structural work and refitting of the 800 m² facilities was the responsibility of Miele's Dutch subsidiary. The official inauguration of the newly equipped premises took place on October 30, 2012.

The order volume amounting to EUR 1.3 m represents the single-biggest order in the company history for System4Med equipment. This project also represented an acid test for Miele Professional as EPC contractor: In the initial stage of the project, the planning team defined the structural layout of the premises step by step. Construction work was later carried out while work in the old CSSD unit continued. Now, following completion, the CSSD represents the current state of the art.

The 696-bed hospital specialising in cardiac surgery was fitted with a container and trolley washer, five large steam sterilisers and five large-chamber decontamination units from the latest series. A 10-year maintenance contract concluded between Miele's Dutch subsidiary and the hospital guarantees the regular inspection and maintenance of all the machines concerned. Miele also supplied further accessories and fittings to the new CSSD - ranging from functional furniture to ultra-sound baths.

Reprocessing around 60,000 sterile supply units per year requires the most efficient workflow management: Bulky items such as transport trolleys and sterile supply containers are washed and disinfected in the trolley washer in the shortest of times. The large steam sterilisers each have a capacity of 8 sterile supply units and sport a steam-heated jacket-type design. This jacket guarantees uniform temperatures, excellent operational readiness and short cycle times. "The sterilisers' excellent drying results and low sound emissions have certainly enhanced day-to-day work in our CSSD", says Ralph van Wezel, pharmacist at the Catherina Hospital and responsible for quality standards in the reprocessing of sterile supplies. The new premises on the hospital's first floor gain not only from the large windows which let in ample daylight: All workplaces are also equipped with new process documentation software for the gap-free recording of data from reprocessing cycles.

It was particularly important for those responsible at the Catharina Hospital for reprocessing to subscribe to nothing but the highest of standards: The hospital is recognised as a centre of excellence in treating hepatitis cases and has been officially decorated by the 'Netherlands Institute for Healthcare Accreditation' for its high quality. All performance qualification measures carried out by Miele medical device engineers as part of the commissioning process were accompanied by additional and even more stringent tests performed by the hospital's own pharmacists during machine operation according to laboratory standards. For this purpose, staff at the Catharina Hospital was given special training as these tests go beyond the processes required in the course of validation.
