mic AG: PiMON technology enables fully automated pipeline monitoring
"With its latest German sensor technology, PiMON addresses an attractive market and fits perfectly into our portfolio. It offers innovative monitoring technology, which enables permanent real-time monitoring for the most diverse applications", says Manuel Reitmeier, mic AG's CFO. "Within mic AG's network, PiMON will also be able to benefit from the know-how of our other participations in the sector of fiber-optic technology, Fibotec Fiberoptics and FiSec", adds Claus-Georg Müller, mic's chief executive.
Using fiber-optic cables, PiMON's technology enables fully automated, real-time monitoring of oil and gas pipelines and other building structures, such as bridges, railway tracks and tunnels. Existing damage is immediately detected and precisely located by the PiMON system. Traditional monitoring methods are more time-consuming, less exact or uneconomic. To guard the intellectual property, an international patent has been filed for the measuring system.
Due to the high demand for commodities, the global pipeline network is growing rapidly. According to a study conducted by Douglas-Westwood, oil and gas pipelines with a total length of around 173,000 km could be built on land between 2011 and 2015. In addition, increasingly stringent environmental standards necessitate improved pipeline monitoring. "PiMON's pipeline monitoring technology is perfectly tailored to the needs of pipeline operators and is superior to traditional monitoring methods. Discussions with industry experts have revealed a high level of interest in the technology and a high demand for an effective problem solution", says Claus-Georg Müller, who is convinced of PiMON GmbH's potential.
As an early-phase investor, Munich-based mic AG mainly invests in - and partly co-founds - companies from the communication, fiber optics, medical technology, microsystems technology and cleantech sectors.
