It was the perfect premiere for the first edition of indometal - international metal & steel trade fair for southeast asia - as it closed on an extremely positive note last week. The 259 exhibiting companies from 26 countries including 70 local and Indonesian-based, six national groups and pavilions (Austria, China, Italy (2), UK and Taiwan) and an official group under the Ministry of Industry Republic of Indonesia showcased their products and services to 6,228 targeted and qualified visitors from more than 20 countries.

The first edition of the specialist trade fair focused on the synergistic interrelations of foundry technology, casting products, metallurgy and thermoprocess technology, has set indometal's position as the ideal platform for the metal and steel sectors in Indonesia and the region.

"indometal 2013 has proven to be a highly successful and beneficial platform for both the overseas and local exhibitors. Indonesia has tremendous business potential in the metal and steel sectors and this is evident in the high quality visitors present at the exhibition. We are extremely happy with the overall outcome of indometal 2013," said Rini Sumardi, Director of WAKENI - joint organizer of the trade fair.

According to Gernot Ringling, Managing Director, Messe Düsseldorf Asia, and joint organizer: "The first edition of indometal has exceeded all our expectations. The exhibitors' positive feedback shows us that our decision to provide a business platform for Indonesia's metal and steel industry was the right move." He added: "indometal fits well into the spectrum of specialised global trade fairs in the areas of foundry technology, iron and steel, under the Messe Düsseldorf Group which it is well known for and includes exhibitions such as GIFA, METEC, THERMPROCESS and NEWCAST."

Exhibitors eye the Indonesian market

With the trend in steel production shifting from mature to emerging economies, and the industry focus on future growth through expanded production, operational agility and efficiency and cost optimisation, Indonesia is the ideal location for a specialised trade fair like indometal.

Commenting on the importance of the Indonesian market, Winfried Resch from the German Engineering Federation (VDMA) said: "The market is still small and starting to grow, but the demand definitely exists. That is why it is important to have an exhibition here at the right time. indometal comes most timely as the industry is preparing for growth and development in the coming years. The size of the exhibition was very good as well as the internationality and mixture of the exhibitors." The VDMA is one of the key association service providers in Europe and offers the largest engineering industry network in Europe. From his positive first impression of the exhibition, Resch is confident that the next edition will welcome an official German Pavilion.

This year's line-up of national pavilions and group organizers were highly satisfied with their participation at indometal. MC-CCPIT's Chairman Yang Zunqing affirmed the Council's participation at indometal 2014 with a bigger group focusing additionally on the downstream industry as they see strong and vast demand in this sector in Indonesia.

The World Foundry Organization (WFO) from the UK also saw great potential in the exhibition and is planning to join in the 2014 edition in order to take advantage of the market growth opportunities part in Indonesia. "The British government sees Indonesia as one of the hotspots for the export market at the moment, so they are naturally interested to be present here", commented Andrew Turner from the WFO. This sentiment was echoed by exhibitors from the Austrian, Italian and Taiwanese Pavilions who have also shown great interest in joining indometal 2014 as they see pronounced potential to do business in Indonesia.

*Title: Innovative Technologies for Metal and Steel

"Having relevant seminars and events held alongside an exhibition like indometal is always beneficial for all involved: for exhibitors to reach out to a targeted audience, attendees to learn about the economic landscape in the country and new technologies and for exhibition organizers like us, it is an opportunity to provide an even more comprehensive networking, learning and procurement platform", said Gernot Ringling.

We look forward to participating again in 2014."

Acknowledging the importance of attending specialised trade fairs, Andrew Keep, Sales Manager at Inductotherm Group Australia Pty Ltd said: "If we visit Indonesia we can meet maybe one or two clients a day, but with an exhibition like indometal we can reach about 30 to 40 customers, new and existing ones." He added: "The business in Indonesia is developing fast, so it is a big advantage to be one of the first companies here with a local production line."

"On the first day of the exhibition we have already closed a sales deal for our brand new press machine. So certainly we will continue to exhibit at indometal in the coming years", commented Ms Armwati, Managing Director of Asai Metal, PT.

"Exhibiting at a trade fair is not only about selling products and gathering leads, but also to gain market knowledge and see what our competitors are doing."

Although the market is still developing, Andrea Kehry, Marketing Manager, LOI Group said it was important for her company to be present at indometal and to penetrate the market. "We expect a change in about 4-5 years, and we have to start now to build up business relationships with local partners and potential customers."

Christopher J. Messina, President, RAD-CON Inc. also echoed the commitment to participate in the next edition of indometal: "Messe Düsseldorf Asia is a very good trade fair organizer and is able to attract the right audience for a trade fair like this. Based on the result so far, we are confident that we will exhibit again next year. We only attend two to three exhibitions a year as an exhibitor and we decided for Indonesia, because we see the immense market potential here. It is important to be here and meet people locally."
