PRELIMINARY SUMMARY: Excellent mood at the IFA 2007 - High expectations more than met

Attendance of 235,000 from home and abroad - 1,212 exhibitors from 32 countries - 733 international companies - IFA gives additional boost to industry

Berlin, (PresseBox) - The organisers, gfu and Messe Berlin, both agree with their positive assessments. "Each year the IFA is the most important international platform for the continued development of the consumer electronics industry. The IFA 2007 has certainly been a massive success for us. Some best-ever results, with 15 per cent more exhibitors, ten per cent increases in the numbers of trade visitors and the general public, and ten per cent more orders for brand name manufacturers all tell the same story", reports Dr. Christian Göke, COO of Messe Berlin.

According to Dr. Rainer Hecker, Chairman of the Supervisory Board of the gfu: "For trade visitors and the public alike the rapid pace of technological developments in the CE industry has created new, digital horizons among the products and services on display at the IFA 2007. We are extremely satisfied with the excellent response to the IFA 2007."

The organisers, gfu and Messe Berlin, registered some 235,000 domestic and international participants at this top-level meeting place in Berlin for the industry, which also enables consumers to experience at first hand the fascinating and innovative world of consumer electronics. Out of a total of 1,212 exhibitors from 32 countries, 733 companies, or 60 per cent, came from outside Germany. There was also an increase in the rented display area at the IFA 2007, by some twelve per cent. Now an annual event, each year the IFA goes from strength the strength.

Many of the market leaders from Germany and abroad agree that the IFA 2007 provides a comprehensive review of the latest systems and technologies in consumer electronics, as well as being the ideal place for placing and taking orders and for establishing direct contacts with consumers.

"The IFA has now become the leading trade show for the CE Industry. Our industry is benefiting from the positive mood among consumers, which is also reflected by the volume of orders at the IFA 2007. It gives a clear signal of the upward trend", according to Hans-Joachim Kamp, Chairman of the Consumer Electronics trade association in the ZVEI and a member of the Supervisory Board of the gfu. With increases in the volume of orders by around ten per cent among brand name manufacturers another significant point has been reached, indicating in particular the continuous development in ordering activity", Kamp stated.

IFA is a chance to experience consumer electronics products live

The IFA provided all who attended with an opportunity to experience consumer electronics products and services live. Dr. Rainer Hecker: "Consumer interest in technological innovations and the products from our industry that bring more diversity to our lives in so many ways remains unabated. Of primary importance to our customers are quality, service and the value of the products, and there has been a significant decline in the bargain-hunting mentality of focusing on the cheapest offers." This was clearly confirmed in the many discussions with the trade and visitors to the IFA.

Other aspects which featured strongly were high definition media and television over internet protocol (IPTV). There was also a very enthusiastic response to the subjects of navigation, mobility, digital imaging and digital music. Other high profile trends at the IFA 2007 included design-oriented CE solutions and premium products, with a greater emphasis on the individual requirements and wishes of consumers.

medienpolitk@IFA and serviceforum@IFA

Media policy issues have traditionally been featured at the IFA. This year, at the series of events entitled medienpolitik@IFA, experts from the public and private networks, along with the representatives of industry and research, took part in three public round table discussions, which focused on actual expectations and wishes regarding the digitalisation of broadcasting in Germany. During these meetings the public sector broadcasting network ZDF reiterated its offer to collaborate in the joint timetable demanded by the industry for the introduction of high definition television (HDTV). The experts also called for clear and fair rules to be applied in the distribution of IPTV. Political support was also offered by the Minister-President of Rheinland-Pfalz and Chairman of the States' Broadcasting Commission, Kurt Beck. Minister-President Kurt Beck again acted as patron of this series of events in 2007.

The serviceforum@IFA took place for the second time in 2007 "The concept of repairs with the aid of a soldering iron has had its day", it was quickly agreed by the participants in the second of these panel formats, the serviceforum@IFA. Dealers' and manufacturers' representatives discussed how the service concept could be designed to become a profitable factor for all involved, i.e. customers, dealers, manufactures, in the modern world of consumer electronics.

IFA 2007 - meeting place for politics, dealers, the industry and the media

Professor Dr. Hans-Gert Pöttering, President of the European Parliament, joined Dagmar Wöhrl, Parliamentary Under-Secretary at the Federal Ministry for Economics, for the traditional opening tour of the IFA. During his own tour of the IFA on the final day of the exhibition Berlin's Governing Mayor Klaus Wowereit also praised this event: "The IFA is a wonderful showroom for the consumer electronics industry, as well as for Berlin as a centre for the media and for trade shows. I am delighted that it has been such a great success again this year."

The IFA 2008 will take place from 29 August to 3 September in Berlin at the Funkturm Exhibition Grounds.
