Masdar PV presents high-tech thin-film solar modules at Intersolar
At the moment the Applied Materials SunFab production line is being installed at the new production facility of Masdar PV in Ichtershausen near Erfurt. According to the specific requirements of Masdar PV the line has been modified to produce modules of highest quality. For instance, the edges of the super-size modules are insulated by an advanced laser technology. Laser technologies will be used for laser cutting to divide the modules into quarterand half-size formats according to customer requirements. "Until now, the edge insulating as well as the format cutting are being done mechanically. In this process there is often the risk of so called micro cracks forming along the frame. By applying this laser technology, we optimize the reliability of our modules", explains Dr. Rainer Gegenwart, CEO of Masdar PV.
Furthermore, there will be seven additional function tests during the manufacturing process of the modules. For example a so called "Wet High Pot Test" is checking every module for its isolation resistance prior to delivery. By doing so, premature failures in the field are being avoided and the final product becomes more reliable. Joachim Nell, COO/CMO of Masdar PV: "We are offering our customers innovative thin-film modules which have been considerably improved so that performance failures in the field are reduced to a minimum. This increases the predictability and return on investment for our customers."
Delivery of the a-Si stack cells is scheduled from October 2009. The Masdar PV modules perform best at high ambient temperatures and diffuse light conditions. The module size of up to 5.7m² is especially suitable for use in free field applications and for commercial rooftop applications.

Masdar PV GmbH
Masdar PV GmbH is a leading global developer of advanced thin-film photovoltaic products and solutions based on tandem-technology. The company produces a-Si/a-Si PV-modules that benefit from efficiency increases of at least 10 per cent when compared with single-layered amorphous silicon (a-Si) modules. Within the next years Masdar PV aims to become a top-3 global thin-film PV company. As a first step two production facilities with a total capacity of 195 MWp are put into operation in Germany and Abu Dhabi, UAE.
Masdar PV GmbH is a 100% subsidiary of Masdar, Abu Dhabi's multi-faceted future energy initiative instigated from and wholly owned by the Mubadala Development Company. This is a far-reaching, trendsetting investment by the Emirate Abu Dhabi with the goal to advance the development, commercialization and deployment of renewable and alternative energy technologies and solutions.
