Environmentally friendly MAN city bus goes on tour with the “biodiversity“ exhibition

München, (PresseBox) - The Bus Division of MAN Nutzfahrzeuge AG is supporting a tour of Germany on biodiversity initiated by the Federal German Ministry for the Environment, Nature Conservation and Reactor Safety with a particularly environmentally friendly city bus which complies with the currently strictest voluntary exhaust-gas standard EEV (Enhanced Environmentally friendly Vehicle). Astrid Klug, Parliamentary Undersecretary of State in the Federal Environment Ministry, started off the German tour under the motto "on the road for diversity" on September 26th in Berlin. The goal of the tour throughout Germany is to draw public attention to the value and benefit of biodiversity prior to the UN conference on nature conservation in Bonn in May 2008.

MAN is one of the few manufacturers which can fulfil the demanding environmental standards of its vehicles with the sophisticated MAN PURE DIESEL technology without such additives as AdBlue®. These innovative common-rail engines are fitted with the electronically regulated CRTec ® particulate filter, which filters up to 99 percent of the particulates out of the exhaust gas and is particularly efficiently monitored. In addition to this further measures are used within the engine, e.g. a two-stage turbocharger with an intercooler, to achieve the required NOx values or the even stricter EEV standards. Beside the almost complete lack of particulates, according to all the available studies the bus also wins high marks with regard to the CO2 emissions. With an average capacity of 30 people the 12m variant of the MAN Lion’s City which is being used achieves just about 35 g CO2 per passenger kilometre. With a full capacity, depending on the model and variant, the value per passenger kilometre is under 10 g CO2 . With the new MAN hybrid bus, which will be ready for series production in 2010, 25 percent of the diesel can even be saved. For an annual kilometrage of about 60,000 kilometres this amounts to an annual reduction in CO2 of up to 10 tonnes! The four (by the end of 2008: 14) MAN city buses with hydrogen combustion engines, already undergoing a fleet test in Berlin in tough day-to-day service within the framework of the HyFLEET:CUTE project sponsored by the EU, are today already completely free of CO2 and fall beneath all the other emission values by a factor of roughly ten.

The tour of Germany for biodiversity will make guest appearances in a total of 16 German cities from 26th September until 20th October 2007. Here the Ministry’s MAN information bus offers a platform for an information programme on stage with prominent discussion partners from politics, culture and science. Starting from Berlin the route runs from Wismar via Kiel, Hamburg, Bremen, Hanover, Magdeburg, Potsdam, Dresden, Erfurt, Munich, Stuttgart, Saarbrücken, Mainz and Frankfurt to Bonn. Beside the MAN subsidiary NEOMAN Bus GmbH the biodiversity tour is sponsored by Karstadt Warenhaus GmbH, Volkswagen AG and Twintec AG. The new MAN Lion’s City hybrid bus will be in service during the UN conference on nature conservation in Bonn in May 2008.
