2,200 school buses for Brazil from MAN Latin America
Delivery of the first 1,100 vehicles begins
The 15.190 VE-03R bus model was specially designed for a government program which aims to increase and improve school bus transportation in the country's rural regions. Special emphasis has been placed on state-ofthe- art safety features and high quality, since the new vehicles often have to travel long distances on basic roads.
"We used all the know-how of our developers, suppliers and quality management team to design this model," emphasized Roberto Cortes, president of MAN Latin America. Construction of the bus was supported by The National Fund for Education Development and studies by the Center for Transportation Research at the University of Brazil. Drivers and bus operators were asked a whole series of questions during test drives, as were teachers and pupils. The insight gained helps municipalities to develop an optimized transportation service.
The specifications of the vehicle has been made the new compulsory standard for buses in rural school transportation throughout the whole of Brazil. This standardization at a high quality level was the express aim of the government program, along with increased transparency in the invitation to tender and in procurement of the vehicles.
A total of around 1,800 buses will be delivered by the end of the year, with the remaining 400 to follow during the first half of 2010. This includes 15.190 EOD chassis and 8.120 chassis for school bus lines in urban areas in addition to the 1,100 complete buses.
