The Piepenbrock Group has scooped a double win at the German Packaging Award 2015. The German Packaging Institute (DVI) presented awards to the subsidiaries Hastamat and LoeschPack for their innovative packaging solutions. Under the patronage of the Federal Minister of Economic Affairs and Energy and in the presence of some 270 invited guests, the most innovative developments from the world of packaging in 2015 were awarded prizes on the eve of the FachPack trade fair.

“The German Packaging Award is once again living up to its reputation as a showcase event,” said Burkhard Lingenberg, member of the DVI board, during the ceremony. “Just under 200 submissions from a wide range of sectors and areas of application, all of a very high standard, made the work of our panel both fascinating and demanding.” The independent panel conferred the awards for outstanding creativity, innovation and technical expertise in the packaging industry. The 2015 winners in the “packaging machines (engineering and technology)” category are the sister companies Hastamat in Lahnau and LoeschPack in Altendorf. Olaf Piepenbrock, managing partner of the Piepenbrock Group in Osnabrück, personally accepted the awards on behalf of the innovation teams. “Our success at the German Packaging Award 2015 makes me extremely proud and testifies to the culture of creative innovation at our subsidiaries Hastamat and LoeschPack,” he said. “Our strengths in innovation allow us to offer our markets around the world customer-centric solutions with the highest level of quality and efficiency in the form of our flexible packaging machines and systems. Special thanks go to all the employees at Hastamat and LoeschPack; without their dedication, this award would not have been possible.”

Vertical multilane wrapper from HASTAMAT

Hastamat was awarded a prize for its vertical multilane wrapper (VMW). This new product is a combination of a grouping unit for small piece goods and – for the first time – a vertical wrapping process. The benefits of the VMW, as assessed by the German Packaging Institute, include its smaller footprint, a consistent modular design and flexible, scalable models with up to six parallel lanes. It packs up to 3,000 products a minute, in the process saving up to 22 percent on packaging materials compared to other solutions. The system can be easily upgraded to wrap up to 12,000 products a minute and can also package fresh sandwich products. A particular feature of the system is that both slugs and portion packs can be produced on the machine. Changeover takes less than five minutes for each lane, as the only mechanical modification involves the exchange of a size part.

Carton packaging and foil wrapping with the LRM-DUO

The technically innovative LRM-DUO packaging machine from LoeschPack also won an award for its design team in Altendorf. The panel was particularly impressed by its combination of two stages of the packaging process that previously required separate machines: carton packaging and foil wrapping. As evaluated by the experts, this combination produces a reduced footprint and improved ease of use together with extensive modularity and flexibility.
