Increase of throughput with Kreyenborg melt pumps

Melt pumps form the core of modern extrusion lines. Their tasks include to build-up and ensure the necessary pressure at the respective tool. Thus also the operational demands of the extruder may be decreased in that way, that an efficiency increase of the complete line is achieved. An effect which also makes the retrofitting of a pump into existing lines interesting.

In extrusion lines which are working without melt pump the complete pressure for the process is built up by the extruder. By a Kreyenborg melt pump of the type GPE the operational demands of the extruder in the line are decreased. Then the essential function of the extruder is limited to the melting and homogenising of the material as well as to the building up of the pump pressure.

The pump pressure can be freely selected and optimally adjusted according to the necessities of the process. Subsequently the gear pump effects the realisation of the necessary pressure and a constant volume flow at the extrusion tool.

For the user this combination has a considerable advantage: By the use of the melt pump the throughput of the complete line may be significantly increased with constant extruder output. This is of especial interest for processors, who retrofit their line with a Kreyenborg gear pump. Years of experience show that - as a rule
- rates of increases of 20 - 30 % may be realised. With the use of filled products the throughput increase is especially high.

An Indian compounder, for example, has retroactively integrated a Kreyenborg gear pump into an existing line for the processing of a highly filled polymer. Before the retrofitting the twin screw extruder achieved a maximum throughput rate of 450 - 500 kg/h with an optimized process. After the installation of the Kreyenborg gear pump of the type GPE 70/70-01 the throughput increased to 600 kg/h with the same material.

Achieving a considerable improvement of the line capacity only by installing a Kreyenborg melt pump, presents an extremely efficient option for the users of single and twin screw extruders. The low investment costs for the retrofitting of a pump are not disproportionate to other possibilities which result in a corresponding increased efficiency. Furthermore owing to the higher line capacity the melt pump will pay for itself within the shortest time.
