Komsa wins the ELA Awards 2019 for project of the year

The KOMSA Group is the winner of the European Logistics Award 2019, awarded by the European Logistics Association. The award ceremony took place at the gala evening in Brussels on 23 May 2019. This comes on the heels of KOMSA winning the German Award for Supply Chain Management in 2018, bestowed by the German Logistics Association (Bundesvereinigung Logistik e.V.).

The prominent jury was won over by how rigorously the medium-sized enterprise KOMSA aligns logistics operations with the needs of its industry and retail partners: the wholesaler makes smart use of automated and manual elements to generate speed at the crucial points while still fulfilling individual wishes.

‘We wanted to create a flexible logistics solution for our customers that would enable us to react to market demands at all times’, says Sven Mohaupt, Chief Process Officer at KOMSA. ‘We are very moved and it’s a positive sign for our partners from industry and retail that this project fought off strong competition to reach the finals and has now won the European Logistics Award after receiving the German Award for Supply Chain Management.’

Outcomes of the prize-winning projec

Low storage and picking costs:

Cost savings for the picking and storage of each order are in the two-digit percentage range.

Short processing times:

Alongside the savings achieved, KOMSA significantly improved the logistics quality parameters. As a result of the logistics project, the processing time for over 50 per cent of orders was reduced from 3.5 hours to less than one hour.

High degree of flexibility:

In its expanded dispatch warehouse, KOMSA is now able to increase dispatch performance from an average of 10,000 to 25,000 package shipments a day.

Maximum flexibility, automation and digitization – these were key elements of the project ‘RELOAD – digitization of KOMSA intralogistics’, which KOMSA realised as part of a site expansion at its headquarters. KOMSA invested a total of 30 million euros, the largest amount in the company’s history, to build a three-story building and a new logistics centre that includes a high-bay warehouse and an automated storage facility in Hartmannsdorf, Saxony (Germany).

The goal of the expansion project, inaugurated in 2017, was to bring all logistics processes under one roof, thereby improving capacity and processing time for industry and retail partners’ orders. It was a challenge to create efficient processes and ensure a high level of flexibility to be able to react quickly to new demands on the market. The answer to this, which KOMSA found together with its partner LogistikPlan from Dresden, followed the logic ‘shortest distances, smallest area, greatest performance’.

The newly-built logistics centre now combines all storage and dispatch processes that were previously spread across five different sites in Hartmannsdorf. The new building provides room for up to 800 workspaces in the immediate vicinity of the logistics area. Around 14,500 palettes can now be stored in a 21-meter-tall high-bay warehouse in the adjacent logistics centre. A central connecting building integrates all logistics functions – from incoming goods and service logistics to storage, repair and returns to dispatch logistics. The logistics concept revolves around the automation of every time-critical process involved in intralogistics: automated material flows for all return and repair orders, automatic removal of empty boxes, automatic storage of small parts and picking preparation according to the goods-to-person principle, automatic provisioning of shipping cartons, automatic supply of picking units for packing and the automatic supply of shipping cartons for loading.

To achieve this, KOMSA relies on powerful IT systems: an integrated digital logistics system continuously links merchandise management, warehouse logistics and transport and order management. Moreover, automated and manual processes are intelligently connected to one another. Thanks to automated storage, items are available for dispatch in less than three minutes and repair orders can be processed on the same day using automated material flows.

Processing times of less than an hour for over half of the orders enable a high degree of flexibility, and express orders can be processed until late in the evening. Dispatch output can be ramped up to more than double in a short period of time. This is an important requirement in the information and telecommunications industry, which is KOMSA’s home sector, to smoothly shoulder the market launch of new products or seasonal peaks such as Christmas trade.
